We will be in Venice for 3 days between Christmas and New years and are
looking for an inexpensive hotel [$100 Euro or less per night per
double] As a family of 4 adults, we need two rooms.
Any suggestions?
Has anyone tried staying on the mainland and commuting? Not my first
choice, but would be interested in experiences that are positive and
allow for inexpensive hotels here.

Cannot tell you about bus & train connections into Santa Lucia but
shouldn't be a real problem. Busstop Via Carducci is 100 meters from Hotel
Centrale.

Personally, I would avoid Mestre at all costs. I have stayed there in the
past, and I found it an ugly, dirty, thoroughly unpleasant city. Besides,
much of the pleasure of going to Venice is being to stroll around the town
after dark, getting delightfully lost in the maze of narrow streets (after
dark it is one of the safest cities in the world, by the way).
There are a number of relatively inexpensive (for Venice) hotels in the
vicinity of Santa Lucia Station and the Piazza Roma. Even if you have to
pay slightly more than you would lilke, I think you would find it worth the
splurge.

Thanks -- will give Metropole a try. We do seem to have selected a busy

Although I highly concur with the group that the best place to stay is in
Venice and not the outskirts I will share one of my recent experiences.
Sorry, not sure if you are driving or not. We decided stay near Venice on
our way since we were driving and arrived late at night. We stopped at a
Holiday Inn Express ( I know this sounds bad) but it was perfect for a place
to sleep...assuming that is all you want. It was about 20km east of Venice,
we got up early and drove into Tronchetto Parking. It probably took 1.5 to
2 hours from leaving the hotel to getting off the Vaporetto on the Grand
Canal. The hotel was a real bargain at about 105 Euros for my family of
four (2 children - one room). It was clean, quiet and had a decent
breakfast.
Then arriving in Venice we stayed at a
http://www.pensioneaccademia.it/-
index-e.html ...again not sure how the
seasons work but the low rate is 124Euro- probably doesn't apply for your
time. I can't say how the double rooms were, but the family suites were
delightful.
Good Luck.

They are both expensive and booked up for that time period -- we are in
the run up to New Year's eve -- high high high season in Venice.
But thanks.
At present we have booked the Centrale in Mestre -- but I do hate to
commute

Many people have done that, and you will likely get
recommendations to do exactly that (or to stay on the Lido). In
my view, both recommendations are terrible. You can perhaps save
a few dollars, but it makes no sense to spend a lot of money to
get to Venice, and then economize by staying somewhere else. It
will be an entirely different experience if you do that.
If you're willing to pay 100 Euro a night for a double, there are
a lot of hotels in Venice to choose from. You won't get luxury,
but you'll find something adequate, comfortable, and much more
convenient than Mestre or the Lido.

Hotel Villa Rosa, near Ferrovia. Cheap, clean, good and in a nice

Plough through this:
http://www.veniceinfo.it/
If there is anything, it will be in there somewhere.
I know there are a couple places in Murano that are
inexpensive(€80-90), and that sure beats Mestre or Lido.
The hotel Rio is €93 &130 for a quad without bath. Don't expect much,
because it has a great location.

thanks -- the period between Christmas and New Years is apparently gouge
the tourist season in Venice -- so we have decided to give it a pass --
Paris instead. Paris is probably a better winter city anyway.
We tried Venice hotels that are routinely affordable and they were sky
high for this period

I give the same advise all the time -- but we are now talking for a
family of four adults of a differential approaching a thousand dollars
for 3 days. There are NOT lots of hotels in Venice that currently are
charging this kind of money a night. Many that typically do so, seem to
be doubling for this time of year. We are typically finding crummy 3
star hotels charming 250 or 300 a night -- for two rooms, that gets out
of sight fast.
But your advise is really spot on -- our solution is to give Venice a
pass and go somewhere else

Jen,
I have had the best luck using:
http://www.itwg.com/locator
I've been searching for rooms in Rome, Venice, etc, and I just booked rooms in Venice in a "special offer" - stay 3 nights - get one three. I noticed that there were several hotels here with "special offers" - I always check the Special Offers out (!) and I am almost positive that one included the Christmas season. (We're going later than that - so I didn't check it out)
