Folks,
I've done it again -- booked flights and made no other arrangements.
Herself and I are going to Venice in February (16th to 21st).
I'm now inviting advice from the gang here and, most particularly,
guidance on finding accommodation. We generally go for two- or
three-star standard, our trade-off between quality and budget pricing.
I know you won't let me down.

Londra Palace is my fave, but that's 4 star & only great if you get one
of the 4th floor balcony rooms overlooking the Lido. Much less
expensive Locanda Orseolo gets great reviews - check out
TripAdvisor.com. Don't miss a lunch at Alle Testiere - and be sure &
made reservations asap as it's so small & popular!

I usually just go to venere.com because it is so easy to book there (or
cancel or change) and the comments by others who have stayed at the places
listed usually is what will seal the deal. If price is a top concern,
looking at the 16th-21st there are doubles on Lido for 40 and 50 Euro per
night at 3-star and 4-star places that are highly rated by people! But the
beach isn't too appealing in February--and Lido is off the beaten track,
that's for sure.
I see the Sant Elena is available for 92 Euro. It's a 4-star that is very
comfortable with very modern interior in an extremely peaceful parklike
setting two vapo stops from San Marco--great breakfast too when we were
there last July (hot bacon, espresso drinks made and served to order).
Otherwise there are a few 3-stars listed, all of which get good marks from
people who've stayed there, for as little as 75 Euro. If it were me, I'd
look at the location of these, and pick one that is highly rated and close
to where you want to stay. The fairlly central *** Palazzo Guardi at 79
Euro/night and the *** Centauro at 75 Euro/night sound like things I
would easily spring for, though I've never seen them.

Thank you.
I have done well with venere.com for previous trips, and agree with
your endorsement. It's just that it's good for my confidence to be
forearmed with personal recommendations from people with whom I have
contact here, and who have no axe to grind.
We're not total cheapskates, and I was supposing that we would have to
pay more than 70 euros a night in a prime destination such as Venice,
even in February. We would go more for something a bit special. In our
book, ultra-modern isn't special; old, interesting, but in good
condition and with modern comforts might be.

This is where I stayed:
http://www.venere.com/templates/go.p...d=112350&lg=en
It's very close to the Rialto Bridge. We stayed in the junior suite
which was very nice, new decor, modern bath but very rustic otherwise.
The breakfast buffet was better than average. I would go there again.

I'm not sure if this recommendation is too expensive but you could
check out the website:
http://www.caffelletto.it/
Click on Caffelletto Proposal, then Region - Veneta, and then check out
the listings for Venezia.
You will find amazing 17th Century lofts, gorgeous Palaces,
wisteria-covered villas etc. These are mostly B&Bs and many are run by
Italy's Aristocratic families.
Cheers,
Alisa

How much are you willing to spend? My personal favorite at a
moderate (but not really budget) price is La Calcina, in
Dorsoduro.

The Giorgione is a very pleasant hotel off the square at C'a D'oro. It's
reasonably priced, rather elegant and well-located (convenient, but not
smack in the middle of tourist-packed areas). We've stayed their twice and
would happily stay again.

Don't miss a dinner (or lunch) at Corte Sconta (Calle del Pestrin) -
that is, if you like fish and seafood.

I highly recommend the Hotel Marconi at Rialto, it is my preferred
hotel in Venice. The (2) rooms that have a balcony are # 101 and 102.
101 is considerably larger. It has 2 french doors that open onto the
balcony overlooking the Main Canal at Rialto... and is very large by
Venice standards.
http://hotelmarconi.it/hotel_marconi_in_venice-en.htm
I have always communicated with them by E-MAIL (not a web form) and
they are very timely. However, these rooms have found strong repeat
loyalty: mailto:[email protected]
Contact:Frederico Ponte
Make him an offer on 101 and 102, he is open to negotiation, and seems
to prefer a confirmed reservation in hand. ($200 has been accepted
recently by someone I referred recently.)
Consider having Frederico make a reservation for dinner for you at
Graspa de Uva. It is just on the other side of the canal from the
Marconi and is one of my very favorite restaurants in the world. The
Maitre-Dee was for years was at Hotel Danieli, until opening Graspa.
The Risotto is superb.

I booked my hotels through the ryanair web-site (actually
octopustravel.com), but make sure the rooms are 'available' (column on
the right hand side, when you see the list of hotels) and not 'on
request'.
I booked a room low season (before xmas) and it was no problem ('Ai
Mori D'Oriente' 4 * in Canareggio, Euro 79 ). Then I tried to book the
same one between xmas and new year (high season).
The small print says that if they cant find the hotel you want they
will give you the next best thing, but...
I discovered (luckily) before I clicked blindly on 'accept' that it
cost Euro 1,050 more than I expected.
So I cancelled and changed to Residence Delfino in Mestre (10 minute
bus ride over the causeway), 3 * euro 83.
Avoid 'Moby Dick' restaurant in Mestre just down from Delfino.

For that many days, a flat is convenient and cheap. I highly recommend the
below -- in the very center of things, near supermarkets, sights, etc. Nice
place, nice people. Mention me( Bob Fusillo).

Mestre is NOT Venice. There are a number of lower priced hotels in Venice.
