James Baldwin went to live in Paris after WW2 because he
understood that he might escape American racism, like Josephine
Baker. But he found he couldn't accept the cultural differences,
and wrote about it in his fascinating book, _Notes of a Native
Son_.

The relative size of the populations has nothing to do with the
probability that either population will emigrate to the other.

Proportion of immigration seems to be the point here. But it's
not my claim in the first place.

There are five times as many Americans as French.

Yes, it does. If 20,000 Americans emigrate to France out of 300
million, that's a probability of 1 in 15,000. If 200,000 French
people emigrate to the USA out of 60 million, that's a probability of
1 in 300. Thus, the French are 50 times as likely to emigrate to the
USA as Americans are likely to emigrate to France.

They generally do live in such communities, in both countries.

Nothing in your post addresses the topic under discussion (unless I am
now the topic under discussion, instead of UNESCO and endangered
languages).

Yes, but you haven't taken account of the Americans who are Americans
because they emigrated to America.
