"drivers in general" is meaningless. Looking at "people in
general" some vandalise public transport, some are muggers, it
doesn't make me unsympathetic to people, the minority who block
bus lanes shouldn't bias you against drivers. Considering they
are often in an unnecessary queue to make space for a nonexistent
bus its surprising how good about it people are.

That's the kind of attitude that makes them go into the bus lane in the
first place. The bus lane doesn't usually _not_ become a bus lane when
there are no buses around.

They need to separate the bus lane from the rest of the road with
concrete slabs like they do in Rome. The occasional car trap that rips
the sump out, like the Dutch have, provides hours of entertainment for
pedestrians. I particularly liked a simple idea they had in Hemel H.
two vertical steel girders embedded in concrete that a car could just
pass through if it was driven very carefully.

Do you look with envy at empty railway tracks too? :-)

I understood. UK railways can't accommodate double decker trains
according to the anoraks. Somebody tried it 50 years ago. I suspect
that the French built double decker trains would fit in UK tunnels and
under bridges, but we don't want frog technoloshite do we?

My point was that the majority *don't*. And its not an attitude,
its an observation! The one into Bromley causes the people doing
their weekly shop to queue twice as long, you see a bus maybe
once in 7 or 8 trips, it will probably be just carrying some yobs
going to steal children's mobile phones in the shopping
centre.:-)

I know, its a design weakness and sometimes a regulation failure.
(in force when not needed).

How does that not block the bus lane though?

The Dutch buses have much more road clearance than cars. I suppose a
Citroen BX could fool it. The sort I had in mind is two deep gutters
that the wheels fit in with a block of concrete separating them. A bit
like the roads in Pompeii.

There's a variety of more expensive things here

Happened to a friend of mine some years ago in his Porsche 928. We did

The illegality is called "Display of Speed" in the US; noisy, obnoxious,
unsafe; simply a penis extension of the driver... I am talking about
"road safety" BTW.

Yes I meant a car that got caught by them would surely block the bus
lane completely.

They are not totally stupid here :-)

There was a car that parked over a steel post that rises out of the
ground. The post was set to close a road at pre-specified times and
I've seen a bit of video of a twit on a bike cycling into one just as
it rose.

The "unsafe" you mentioned refers to what then?

Good acceleration is clearly safer, overtaking is safer done
quickly.
I do remember reading something once that implied there was a US
law relating to what in UK is probably "furious driving", stuff
like spinning the wheels on purpose. Nothing to do with anything
really, boy racer stuff.
