UK motorways- what are those little yellow signs

Driving round the UK last week I noticed that a lot of the direction
signposts on the motorways and other major roads have cryptic little
markers on them- a yellow square with some symbol in black- lozenges,
triangles and spots, for example. I guess they must be preferred route
indicators, but where can I find out about them? I tried the AA website,
drew a blank.
Thanks

Quite the opposite, they're pre-decided diversion routes, so if the
motorway closes unexpectedly, they can quickly put up a Follow the
Black Square route, rather than having to get people with diversion
signs out to all the junctions.

That sounds a little bit like the German system. If you have to exit the
autobahn because of a major traffic jam, you just make a note of the
diversion sign, which will be "U" followed by a number. The diversion is
signposted all the way back to the next autobahn entrance.
