Default U.S. airlines must now reveal where aircraft were built

BLOOMBERG NEWS
Wednesday, June 22, 2005

U.S. airlines must tell passengers where planes were built, under a
rule that becomes final today and was prompted by a U.S. lawmaker's
concern that so many aircraft are being manufactured outside the
country.

Carriers, including American Airlines and United Airlines, must place
the information on the plastic cards in airplane seat backs that
describe emergency exits.

The rule is the result of a provision that Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., who
is chairman of the House aviation subcommittee, added to legislation
enacted in December 2003.

"All of the airlines are probably already in compliance," Federal
Aviation Administration spokesman Les Dorr said yesterday in
Washington. The agency estimated it would cost carriers $522,000 to
print stickers with the location where planes were "finally assembled"
and place them on the placards in 6,559 aircraft.

Airbus has won more orders than The Boeing Co. in five of the past six
years and delivered more planes the past two years. U.S. airlines also
use planes made by Montreal-based Bombardier Inc. and Empresa
Brasileira de Aeronautica SA, which has its headquarters in Sao Jose
dos Campos, Brazil.

The requirement is "irrelevant" because aircraft manufacturing is a
global industry and planes contain parts from countries around the
world, said Mary Anne Greczyn, a U.S. spokeswoman for Airbus.

The company's planes are "finally assembled" in France or Germany, she
said.

Umm, if the emergency exit card says "Boeing" or "M-D" its US made, if
it says "Airbus" it isn't.

Who cares?

The company that gets the contract for printing up those little cards?

Well that's the start. Then you've to specify every detail in the
construction.
It's not unlikely that the Boeing have a number of imported things , perhaps
Rolls-Royce engines ? And the Airbus is likely to have at least some
details imported from U.S , I would guess flight computers ? And food
stuff being from ? And what about the fuel, isn't there reason to make a
declaration of the fuel origin ?

I'd be content if they narrowed it down to animal, vegetable or
mineral.

This is stupid. Why not insist on revealing the IMPORTANT
information, like WHERE THE METAL WAS MINED? The car you buy
IS made of metal mined in the USA, isn't it? It should be.

many x-posts cut

It's a nonsense. For example, I know that for many years
Boeing elevons and ailerons were made here (and possibly
still are), and the odds are that the bauxite which led to
the aluminium for many of the world's aircraft was mined
here or Canada and processed here or Canada as well.

If where the plane was built was of any importance to me, it's
kinda too late to do anything about it once I've bought my ticket
and am sitting in my seat.

PASSENGER: "Let's see, made in... BRAZIL! This is completely
unacceptable! I demand my money back!"

AIRLINE: "No."

Good luck with that. Is there a country on this planet that DOESN'T
make part of the Boeing 777???

You people are missing the point.

The idiocy of US politicians is the issue.

Is there no limit as to the quantity, stupidity or frivolity of laws
that are created in the land of the free?

Is it not bad enough that your law makers are writing laws that make
certain cheerleading stunts illegal because they are "lewd" or
sexually suggestive?

Now they are going to saddle US airlines with thousands of dollars in
useless costs that will simply be handed over to passengers and will
have no effect on getting passengers to buy tickets on carriers that
use US-built planes?

And they think that will make a difference exactly how ?

Sounds xenophobic to me. Not mention staggeringly dumb.

... which probably explains why it was praised on CNN's

the right is welcome. (-;

[It would be hilarious to see the reactions outside
North America if this show ever got on CNN Int'l!]

Whoever buys tickets based on price is influenced by the effect of
operating costs. That means - is the airline efficiently run and do they
fly aircraft with low operating costs.

If Boeing can't make aircraft that are cheap to run then ppl will ( all
other things being equal ) use the carrier operating more efficient
aircraft.

A placard won't change anything. It's totally bizarre. Like - who made
the engines ? Are they GE or RR ? Does that count ? It can be 25% of the
purchase price !

I think it might be at least as interesting to see notices indicating where
*maintenance* was done.

A greater awareness of the practice of US (and probably European) carriers
flying their planes off to overseas bases for maintenance might make for
some interesting discussions.
