Trip to Scandinavia - possible itinerary ideas

This is all tentative, and I encourage feedback. I'm budget-oriented, but
obviously that is not my only consideration, or I wouldn't be going to
Scandinavia in the first place. I am travelling with my 16-year-old son. We
will probably stay in hostels.
Possible Itinerary:
Arrive in London, June 28 (from Canada)
Leave London, afternoon on RyanAir June 30 - fly to Oslo
Stay in Oslo until the evening of July 3.
On July 3, take the overnight ferry to Frederikshavn, arriving the morning
of July 4.
Stay in Frederikshavn during the day, and in the evening take the bus/train
to Aarhus, arriving the evening of July 4.
Stay in Aarhus until July 7, and on the evening of July 7, travel to
Copenhagen. (What is the best way?)
Stay in Copenhagen from July 7 to July 11, leaving in the evening for Malmo.
Stay in Malmo until July 12, taking a RyanAir flight in the evening for
London Stansted.
Stay in London until July 14, and take the flight back home to Canada from
London on the afternoon or evening of July 14.
Obviously we can't see everything, and I only have a limited amount of time.
So I welcome advice. We probably won't be able to add more Swedish cities,
as seeing Norway and Denmark are most important personally for us. I also
don't want to reduce the London part of the itinerary.
Thank you.

Just one general comment. Few people go to Scandinavia only or mostly for
*cities*. They have some OK cities there, but what really makes Scandinavia
special and very much worth visiting are the rural areas. I just love
Norway's nature.
I'd stay in Norway, "do" Oslo and Bergen for cities, and see the fjords in
between.

Best way from Aarhus to Copenhagen is by train, make sure you book and if
you don't smoke specify non-smoking. They're clean, fast, affordable and
very comfortable, you'll enjoy the train/ferry rides, make sure to eat on
the ferries as the food is usually good.
Look into the Youth Hostel Assoc. www.IYHF.org for good accommodations
unless you've got family to stay with. There's is a historic hostel in the
middle of Aarhus in 'Riskoven' very pretty set in the middle of a forest
park.
Denmark is the most affordable of the three Scandinavian countries and it
has the best food by far (sorry if I've offended anyone, I'm Swedish but
prefer Danish food).
Best of luck

As far as I can see the only options for ferrys between Oslo and
Frederikshavn will be Stena Line, but according to their website you
can`t make online bookings for that particular line. Could not find a
timetable either. Maybe they only run in the summer ??? Try to mail
them for more information: [email protected].
>Stay in Frederikshavn during the day, and in the evening take the bus/train
>to Aarhus, arriving the evening of July 4.
Take the train - there are hourly connections throughout the day. On
some of the trains you will have to make a train change in Aalborg -
no big deal, it should only add a few minutes to the total travel
time, which is about 2.5 hours.
I don´t think its worth making a reservation as you will only be
going to Aarhus , and you will be boarding the train at the start of
the line .There is an electronic display by the seats so that you can
tell whether the seat will be reserved or not.

Again, by train, hourly connections. Travel time around 2 hours 40
min. Reservation recommended.

No ferry crossing anymore , since the "great belt" car bridge +

Two museums in different countries are being confused here. The Viking
Ship Museum is indeed in Oslo, Norway -- not far from the Fram Museum
with its preserved polar exploration ships, which is *also* worth seeing.
But the Viking ship is not the Vasa (also spelled Wasa). The Vasa is a
warship that sank in Stockholm harbor in the 17th century and was raised
in the; it is now a museum, which naturally is in Stockholm, Sweden.

Yes. And in my opinion it is very nice although quite far a "kiddie"

There is also the Kon Tiki museum in Oslo with Thor Hyerdahl's Kon Tiki
and Ra II. It is amazing how small these things are. Thor must have been
nuts to set out across the ocean on reeds and logs.
I suggest Oslo to Gothenborg, and then the ferry to Fredrickshavn.
Gothenborg is a nice city and not far off your plan, as opposed to
Stockholm. The Jutland peninsula is an idyllic rolling hills pasture
land. Renting a car in Fredrickshavn and driving to Kobenhavn would be a
memorable event. The Danes are good drivers.

Weeeell, you know, it is possible for two museums in different places
to have a name like that. And if you check the URL I posted for the
one in Oslo, you'll find that *they* think the place is called the
Viking Ship Museum (in Norwegian, Vikingskipshuset). So...

Dear Traveler,
Why do you want to spend so much time in Ã…rhus?
Not that it isn't a nice city, but IMO you'd get more of a feeling of
Denmark if you either made an excursion to the countryside (Mols ½ hours
drive north of Ã…rhus is a nearby possibility, Skagen incl. the 1hrs
trainride from Frederikshavn is another) or went straight to Copenhagen and
made daytrips to various places on Sealand ie. Frederiksborg Castle in
Hillerød (45min trainride), Liselund Castle on the southern island Møn (a
long daytrip best done by car), Roskilde a nice city with the infamous
Vikingeskibsmuseet (30min trainride).
Depending on your departure flight it might more convenient staying in
Copenhagen and catching the train to Malmø in the morning rather than
packing up everything for just 1day - unless of course you want to see some
of Malmø ;-)
All the best

There is a very nice one day Train, boat bus, train combination
trip into the fjord in Norway called "Norway in a Nutshell"
purchasable from ticket counter in Oslo, starts and finishes in
Oslo. goes up to mountains by train, then down the side of
mountain to a boat trip and then around the fjord and then back
up to top by bus and a train back to Oslo.
Nice scenery.
Can get train from Copenhagen to Oslo via gotteburg.
Stay overnight in Oslo and then go on trip and return to Oslo.
