Re: Travel time and fare between London and York
By train, it is approimately 2+ hours. Prices vary wildly (from approximately $35 to
$180 per person) with the cheapest probably the "cheap day return" where you travel
to and from in one day. Go to trainline (http://www.trainline.com) to determine what
works best for you and book on line. If you can't pick up the tickets at the station,
then have them mailed to your hotel.
It is possible to make the trip in one day. Betty's is a York institution and
recommended for lunch or tea. The Minster tour is recommended as is Evensong. Walk
the Shambles. There are several good museums.

If you don't want to do a cheap day return, I;ve found the absolute cheapest tickets are super advance, i.e. bought quite far in advance depending on availability (fri evening out and sun return goes very quickly) . Weekdays are best.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Journey time is between 2 hours and 2 hours 15 minutes, trains leave London Kings
Cross roughly every 30 minutes. Fares vary between GBP 30 (Standard class Bargain
Return) and GBP 211 (First class open return - there are even higher priced
"executive packages"!). Availability of the different fares depends on the time of
day you are travelling, class of travel, how far in advance you book, whether you're
travelling back on the same day, and the quota of seats available at that price on
each train. See http://www.qjump.co.uk/

There used to be a very nice upgrade to first class for only six pounds per person
available at certain times. Don't know if they still have it.

There are all kinds of cheap fares which you have never thought of. For instance, 2
adults get a family fare reduction, even if they are of the same sex. The fare after
9:30 AM (if my memory is correct) is less than 10 minutes before. So the rule is -
always ask "What is the cheapest way to accomplish this?"

Http://www.thetrainline.com will give the available trains on a given date along with
assorted fare variiations possible. These will rely on how far in advacne, whether
one has some kind of discount card, etc. Also note that if you have a Network Card
for the Southeast you can get a large discount as far as Huntingdon.
Finding fares on UK rail is a very confusing process.

Finding fares is confusing even if you know the systems very well. It also changes so
it is not much use if you live outside the UK giving advice. You will almost
certainly be out of date. Also valid routes and operator may be difficult to
determine The advice ask the cheapest fare is sound. For example, after resaerch
locally I found the price to make a particular journey with all posible combinations
of route. When I enquired at the booking hall I was given the price of the fares I
had previously obtained, confirming what I knew. This was £34. 50p. I then asked for
the cheapest fare, which was £5. This fixed price applied over a wide area for a
limited period, but I had to use the magic words "what is the cheapest fare via this
route by any operator" on the day. I would not have been told this fare the day
before. The cheapest fare may also be much slower and be restricted to the time of
use, whuich trains are used fo return. Adjustments to the journey may occur. They did
on the day mentioned with the connection being missed.
