I know Russia isn't really a European destination, but I am betting some
folks here can help with this question.
We are planning a trip to Russia next year. We will be going with Grand
Circle on a river trip, spending three nights in Moscow, about six on the
river, and three in St. Petersburg.
My question is when. Definitely not winter! And we avoid the summer when
possible. Which would be the better time, spring or fall? Or is there a
difference? In many places, the scenery is much prettier in the spring, but
sometimes other factors are more important.
Any suggestions?

I visited St. Petersburg in June a few years ago and the weather was
lovely - warm, mid-20s in the day, but not stifling, and comfortable for
sleeping at night. The days were looong of course and I loved it.

I may have to re-think our normal schedule. What do the rest of you think
about summer?

Why on earth would you avoid Russia in summer? It's about the only
time the temperature is nice, and there isn't an excess of mud and
snow.

Why on earth would you avoid Russia in summer? It's about the only
time the temperature is nice, and there isn't an excess of mud and

Definitely re-think your plans!
We were in Russia in July 2004, and we thought the weather was great for
touring: moderate and sunny. During the morning and evening, we wore a
light-weight anorak over our outfit. My outfit may have included an
extra layer (e.g. sleeveless silk cami or a cotton cardigan) but that's
only because I tend to be very cold.
Having slogged our way through Florence more than once in the summer and
Sicily in early June, we now try to head to a northern destination
during summer travel. We did Norway in 2000, and this year, we're
heading to Ireland.

Your (pl) oufit? You were the pantomime horse, then?
In any case, my Big Sis lived in St Leninsberg for a year, and she
conceded there could be midges in the summer - it is after all a
monumental folly built on a swamp.
(I neglected to visit - I don't do third-world countries.)

I have had three trips to Russia (twice as the USSR) including the
river cruise, and I would suggest mid-September to mid-October for the
best weather. Nary a drop of rain on any of the journeys.

A "folly" in the sense that Versailles or Hearst Castle or the big "Ceacescu
Palace" in Bucharest or the Stalin skyscraper in Warsaw are follies...
