Default Travel Guide - Backpacks Versus Suitcases

Ok so you are planning to travel, and considering taking a suitcase:

Advantages of a suitcase are: easy access to the contents, less likely
to get caught in baggage conveyors, easier to store, great in airports
and hotels when the little wheels touch down and smoothly roll on the
concourse floors.

Disadvantages You can't carry most suitcases for more than a few
minutes. This is the main and most important disadvantage. From the
point you decide to take a suitcase instead of a backpack you are tied
to taking taxis, cars, booking your hotels and hostels in advance. You
lose freedom. This is the advantage of a backpack and for the
independent traveller freedom is one of the most important features of
the journey.

Your clothes stay put better. They fit on luggage racks better.
Your back is happier. Less sweating.

"Tied"? Isn't that a bit like saying that folks on a cruise are
"tied" to the cruise ship? For alot of folks they consider taxis,
cars, and advanced bookings GOOD things. (And I'm not sure
how a suitcase or backpack really changes the need, or lack
thereof, for advanced reservations).

You mean like the freedom from having to run around everyday
and figure out where you're gonna stay? The "advantage" to a
backpack has far more to do with portability over uneven surfaces
than anything else. The schlep from the station to the hotel is
easier with a pack that doesn't have to negotiate curbs or
turn styles. The advantage to a suitcase is one doesn't have
to play junior assistant sherpa on their own vacation.

Oh, and quit spamming the newsgroups.
