Yes, you can buy TelecomEirann cards anywhere and then just stick 'em in the
pay phones. May well be cheaper (and will definitely be much easier) than
Walmart for calling back to the USA too.

While it may be better to buy local prepaid cards, it isn't necessary to do
so. The AT&T card will work fine, and it usually will be cheaper for
calling the US. The AT&T card isn't the best option, and I completely agree
that the cards of the national carrier of the origin are much more
convenient, particularly for short calls. The best rates are usually the
3rd party prepaid cards that are purchased locally for calling specific
destinations, not the national carriers. I've found that the AT&T card is
usually more expensive than MCI, but it depends on the specific rate factors
for the countries involved in the call. For short calls between european
countries, such as for booking reservations during a trip, it would be hard
to beat the convenience of the national carriers' cards.

From Ireland to the US, the Walmart AT&T card is $.24/min while the Eircom
chargecard seems to be .34 euro/min. From Ireland to Ireland, the AT&T rate
doubles, making the Eircom cheaper and more convenient. The Walmart card
doesn't offer the best base rate for AT&T at 6c/min: the Sam's Club AT&T is
about half that rate, the last time I checked. The Costco MCI prepaid card
is often the cheapest US carrier for european calling, as it has a low base
rate and the lowest european rate factors, on average.

Not in my experience. A few years ago I needed to call from Italy to
the UK. After a long discussion with the AT&T operator in the US we
determined that my Sam's card was only able to call from or to the US.
It could not be used from Italy to the UK. I doubt that the Wal-Mart
card would be different. FFM

Who ya going to believe, some incompetent AT&T operator who couldn't tell
you how to use the card (and then says it's impossible to cover his/her own
ignorance), or those of us who've used these prepaid cards between european
countries countless times? <smile>

Learning the dialing sequence to get these cards to work can be rather
daunting, so I'm not surprised when many people can't get them to work, but
they _do_ work, if you figure out the magic combinations from country to
country. I mostly use the Costco MCI card (because it's usually cheapest
for Europe), but I've used the Sam's Club AT&T card too. The Walmart card
is overpriced, but it uses the same network as the Sam's Club card.
