Splitting time: Provence vs French Riviera
I am trying to split 9 available days between Provence and French
Riviera. So far, my impression is that the Provence is a way more
interesting region, with its authentic beauty and Roman monuments,
while the Riviera - well, it is basically watching how the reach and
famous having good time :-) So I am thinking of splitting it as 6 and
3 days, correspondingly. But I would be interested in your opinion.

I think that the French Riviera these days is more for those that wish they
were the rich and famous in the '60's
I would split 9 and 0
maybe 8 and 1 if you really must see 'it'.
which part of the Riviera are you attracted to ?
Monaco although debatably French is worth 0.5 to 1 day (and a night in the
casino).

More like the 1930s, it was already ruined by the 1960s.

I'd suggest 7 and 2 at most.
We only had four nights between the Spanish and Italian
borders. We spent three in Avignon and the final one in
Menton. This may give you some ideas:

I reckon we got the proportions right:-) Of course, I'd have
liked to have stayed longer, but maybe next time.

I spent several days in Nice and really enjoyed my time there. Of
course, I'm very interested in contemporary art so it's not suprising
I'm enthusiastic about that slice of the Riviera. I was able to visit
the Chagall Museum, Modern and Comtemporary Museum, Matisse Museum. A
day trip outside the city combined a visit to the Foundation Maeght with
an, admittedly, touristy visit to St. Paul de Vence. I avoided the beach.

I have a place near Cannes and I love it there too. Anyone who doesn't

The further from Cannes the better IMO. In summer it's full of nouveau riche
showing off their wealth. In winter it is dead.

Nice has some good modern art museums, a pretty old town and
promenade, and some great restaurants, but otherwise there's really
not much there. It is worth a short visit to explore the old town, or
if you have the budget for and interest in those restaurants, or are
into modern art. I wouldn't bother with anywhere else on the Riviera,
including Monaco.
IMO Marseille is far more interesting than Nice or the Riviera, if you
want to visit an interesting port city with a strong North African
influence, and which is a real contrast from rural Provence.

I would say, go in the direction of Monaco, but stay on the bus and get
off in Menton, a charming town.

I think it depends entirely upon what you like. The French Riviera
is quite beautiful, as any coastal region can be. But if you
don't have much interest in the beach, I probably wouldn't spend
more than a couple of days.

I want to second Karen. The Fondation Maeght is one of my favorite museums
in the world: great site, great building, great art.
And I really liked Nice. It's a good transportation center for daytrips to
Eze, Antibes, Monaco, St. Jean-Cap Ferrat, etc., and back into the mountains
on the little Train des Pignes. Plus the market, the food, the architecture,
the lifestyle are all very appealing. As for the beach, just walked along
the Promenade des Anglais.
