Default Spain, books or movies?

Travelling to Spain in April, I would enjoy reading any currently popular
novels or viewing (fictional) movies available on video that are set in
Spain.

Can anyone make a recommendation of a book or movie?

Email copy of your response would be appreciated. Thanks.

The most popular book in Spain is probably Harry Potter y el caliz de fuego!

Try the rough guides to Spain they are more than guide books and have good
reading lists.

Otherwise: Fandango Rock.... John Masters; As I walked out one midsummers
morning. Laurie Lee; España.James Michener . The Spanish table, a cookbook
by Marimar Torres

All are quite old but help with atmosphere.

Dear Thomas,

Some films you might watch:

In Espanol:
If you are not familiar with the films of Spanish director, Pedro Almodovar,
see any and all of them. Currently at theaters is Talk to Her, but all of
his oeuvre is for rent and very popular. Almodovar is one of the great
contemporary filmmakers and any and all of his works are interesting takes
on modern life in Spain.

In English (mostly):
One of my favorite directors, Whit Stillman, has a film called Barcelona.
This is set in Barcelona, Spain, but is in English and the main characters
are mostly Americans working in Spain. But it is a good film and you will
like it, I think.

Also, there is a Ken Loach film about the Spanish Civil War called Land and
Freedom. Land and Freedom is the story of young men and women who joined
in the Spanish Civil War; again, most of the main characters portrayed are
not Spanish, but some are.

Both of these are well made films, outside the main stream, though. I find
them both worth watching, but Barcelona is a more light hearted and
accessible story, IMO.

I hope you enjoy them.

The film, The Disappearance of Garcia Lorca, (Spanish title: Muerte en
Espana), was very interesting. Set in Granada, it deals with the murder of
the poet at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War.

Iberia by James Michener, although it's from the late '60's. The new
Spaniards, by John Hooper. And Let's Go guides will give you an
overview. Look for films by Carlos Saura and Pedro Almodovar. The
filma Mad Love, and Devil's Backbone, and Butterfly. The country and
its history are so complex..you will get little pieces from these
sources, but maybe not a sense of context. Every region is its own
kingdom, in a sense. But have at least a Cliff Notes idea of the
history before you go, and that will help.

If you're visiting Barcelona, do take Orwell's "Homage to Catalonia", an
account of his experiences in the Spanish Civil War -- reading it while
there, sometimes on the very streets he mentions, was a memorable
experience.

BTW your post made me realise how few English(-language) novels are set in
Spain...

"Spain For Dummies". seriously. I saw it at Borders in san francisco
this evening. And it looks good! Based on Frommers, I think. You
wouldn't want to take it out in public...hahahaha....but check it out,
i think it might just be what you're looking for.

If you do a search on amazon.com for novels set in spain, you will
come up with quite a lot. I did the same just for barcelona and came
up with a couple of detective novels i ordered on line cos they
definitely don't carry 'em at the local B & N.

Not a hemingway fan either, but the best novel -- or trilogy-- i ever
read, prior to going to live in spain, was by Jose Maria Gironella,
first volume is "Los Cipreses Creen en Dios" (The Cypresses Believe in
God) written at the end of the '60's, mostly about the spanish
republic and the Civil War. Fascinating story, really well-written,
and by the time i got there, the country and streets and villages just
came alive for me.

wow: thanks for this list! info on most of these can be found on
us.imdb.com. Iinternet movie data base) Almodovar is certainly not the
only filmmaker from spain. but he and Carlos Saura are the most
easily found directors on video in the US.
