Default Southern Italy

Hello all fellow Italian lovers,

My family and I (I being the 21 yr college kid, getting a free truip
=) )are traveling to Italy at the end of May. We are flying into Rome
and plan to travel South. All said and done, we have around nine days
to see what we want. We are renting a car and immediately south.

Our planned itienary so far is to stop in Naples for a few hours and
then go to the Amalfi Coast. We want to stay there for 2-3 days and
see the surrounding area. Any advice on what to do here. Esp, do you
or do you not recommend Capri.

We also want to spend 2-3 days in Sicily.

This leaves us with around 3 days left to see other parts of Italy.
We are driving from Salerno to Reggio di Calabria. This is where the
main question is, do you recommend stopping cities/towns along the way
or going out to the East Coast? If someone has specifically traveled
both parts, could you recommend. I really appreciate all the help.

Lastly, if you email me, please put Italy in the subject line, I get a
lot of junk email. Thanks!!

Thanks for your help,

-Neil

Hi Neil!

A few hours in Naples you wrote.
But, what can you see in a few hours?
Not the Capodimonte Museum nor the Archeological Museum
and many other beautiful churches and squares of Naples.
Why don't you go to Pompei?

I think that Naples and its sourrondings worth more than
a few hours.

2-3 days on the Amalfi Coast is ok and you could go to Capri
on 1 day excursion if you think more time would be too much.

Sicily is wonderful and I would spend the rest of my time there:
Palermo, Taormina, Cefalù, Siracusa. Look at a map and plan
an itinerary.

The east part of the south is really nice (I live there), but 2-3 days
are not enough.

Have a nice time in Italy.

Getting to Sicily is a pretty big time sink. Between that and the fact
that Sicily is a fantastic place I would encourage you to spend more
time there. We stayed a week on the East Coast and never got farther
west than Agrigento.

As always in this newsgroup it depends on what you want to see or do. I
agree with others that a few hours in Naples would be a waste. I have
driven along the western coast south of Naples many times (I was born in
Calabria) As you go further south it becomes less crowded but the scenery
just keeps improving. Two little places that we have stopped at often and
really like are Sangineto Lido and Amantea on the west coast about 1/2 hour
from Catanzaro. I think that Sicily is really worth seeing. It is hard to
recommend any place in particular, but try the interior for a change. Most
people just drive along the coast!
Have fun!

It's very difficult to fit Sicily into a trip with any other part of
Italy. It will take you the better part of 2 days to get there and back,
and getting around within Sicily is rather slow. Going there for 2 or 3
days is not really worth it.

I suggest that you pare down your itinerary a bit instead of trying to
add more to it. You could spend a day visiting the Amalfi coast and then
take the ferry from Naples to Sicily for example and spend the rest of
the time in Sicily, returning to Naples for your departure. Or you could
do some driving along the coast(s) of southern Italy and skip Sicily.
Either would be a nice vacation, but trying to do both would be very
difficult.

Depending on which kind of things you want to see and if you prefer to stay
in small or bigger towns, you might choose very different places.
Here are some examples:
Taormina, Giardini Naxos, Agrigento, Palermo, Monreale,
Catania and surroundings, Etna,
Selinunte, Torre Archirafi,
Gioiosa Marea, Siracusa, Erice, just to name some places. You may look for
an accomodation in a smaller town if you want to save money and travel
around, although it may be worth a mention that Sicily is quite a large
island and it may take some hours to travel from Catania to Erice just to
give you an example.

If I were you, I would greatly rethink your entire itinerary. I
think you're trying to squeeze far too much into too short a
time. "A few hours" in Naples is so little as to be almost a
complete waste of time. I highly recommend Capri, but you haven't
given yourself any time to see it; I've been to Capri half a
dozen times, and have spent as much as a week there at a time.

If you want to spend 2-3 days in Sicily (which is much too
little, in my view) and are planning on driving there and back,
you've used up five of your nine days off the bat. After 2-3 days
on the Amalfi coast, you have nothing like three days left to see
anything else.

I would greatly scale back your plans. Nine days is very little.
Make the most of them ny not spending all your time rushing from
one place to the next. Pick at the most two or three places and
spend your time there. And if you want to go to Sicily, be aware
that it's a big island with many interesting places to see and
things to do--nine days is by no means too much for just Sicily.
Either spend all of your time in Sicily or spend a few days each
in places like Capri and Sorrento.

Less is more.

It's going to take you a few hours to get in, park, and get out.

Its the original poster again.

I really appreciate all the advice.

I have a few additional questions:
I have read a lot about Capri. The impression I have gotten, and
please please correct me if im wrong, it seems to be a very resort
like place. Can someone who has been there give me a good
description. (maybe compare to places like, nice, france, jamica,
costa rica, or the carribean, if possible)

Secondly, if we had about 6 days to go from Amalfi to Sicily and spend
in Sicily and back, would that be more reasonable?

I want to do two main areas of Italy this time, Amalfi and one other,
I guess the East Coast and Sicily.

Lastly, regarding Naples. How much time do you recommend spending, if
we want to see major attractions. (Also, I did not mean to insult
anyone with the few hours comment, I guess we just want to see it all,
in the short time we have)

Thanks for all your help, esp to the Native italians.

Stay in Sorrento. From there you can take day trips to Naples (via the
commuter train), to Pompei and Herculaneum (ditto), to Capri (15 minute boat
ride), and to the Amalfi Coast (by bus or car if you insist). With a car you
can get to Paestum--maybe on your way to Sicily. And Sorrento's a nice
place.

Has anyone suggested the ferry from Naples to Sicily? Maybe you wouldn't
need to rent a car until you got to Sicily? I don't quite know what you mean
by the East Coast.

To be honest, the last time we were in Naples (quite a long time ago) I don't
think we saw any major attractions or "must sees" as others call them. Just
wandering around and exploring and watching life in this fascinating city was
the major attraction for us. So from a couple of hours to a couple of days -
depending on your stamina and interest in roaming.

Neil, aren't you going to see Pompeii and Herculaneum? Pompeii will take
you about 4 or 5 hours just to scratch the surface. Herculaneum will
take about 2 hours. Too tiring to see both on one day but could be done.
They are on the same suburban rail line.

Capri, I think out of season it is very pleasant but it is a zoo in
season. The shops are pretty (high end fashion) and outside the town,
the cliff paths are lovely but I am sure that elsewhere along the coast,
you will find similar. So with such a short time, spend it visiting the
archeological museum in Naples. Have pizza in its birthplace!

If you are concerned about budget and are staying the the Sorrento /
Naples area for a few days, consider getting a pass, the artecard. You
can get one with transportation or without.

For information about the Campania and the Napoli Artecards, see
http://www.artecard.it/ Choose English on the left menu if you don't read Italian.

One free journey on Metro Del Mare is included (in season):

For the local trains to Pompeii and Herculaneum (runs between Naples and
Sorrento)

Having done both in May, I'd advise doing Pompeii -- with a very good
guidebook and lots of water -- and skipping Ercolano. Both are
fascinating -- but one is enough IMHO on a short trip like this.
