One smashed my wife's car. There is nothing funny about drunken drivers. There
seem to be considerably more in Belgium than in NL.

This shows the weakness of the UK insurance system. In other European
countries, the vehicle is insured, not the driver, and it is impossible
to get number plates without an insurance policy.

I'm sure it is, but on the odd occasion when i have driven an uninsured
vehicle i have been extra careful, probably in the same way that many people
drive extra carefully on a Saturday morning after a night on the piss.

I'm not defending people who drive without insurance, merely pointing out
that it doesn't automatically make them a bad driver.

to me it seems similar to the view that many on here hold about BMW drivers,
my father has been driving for over 40 yrs and in the mid 80's he owned a 5
series for about a year, do they seriously think that he turned into a
nutter for that short time?

So what happens when you already have your number plates and you let
the insurance lapse?

AIUI there's an indicator on the plates to show the expiry date.

In one or two.

Most countries use a system very similar to ours.

Having a French-style insurance sticker in the windscreen would be a good -
and very cheap - start, though.

Do the number plates self-destruct if an ethically diverse person
tries to borrow them off another car?

This is simply untrue. For instance in Finland the liability insurance is
mandatory. And it DOES compensate injuries In Finland there is no set upper
limit and in Sweden the limit is tens of millions per victim. In some other
countries the liability insurance can much weaker: it may cover only the
driver and even then the limit may be ridiculously low. One should always
have the worst scenario in mind - that he is not able to support himself
anymore financially or otherwise. Fortunately in the ETA countries (most of
Western Europe and some other countries) one can decide what terms are used
to claim compensation - terms in effect in the country of residence or the
country of accident.

Insurances covering vehicles are always and everywhere optional.

No but they become invalid as soon as they are reported stolen.

Ahem, misunderstanding I fear. Nik is referring to the fact that in most
European countries the vehicle is insured irrespective of who is driving it.
In the UK it is usually restricted as to who is insured to drive a vehicle.
Have a look on your Green Card ( if its a non-British one ) there should be
a section where all drivers have to sign if it is to be used in the UK.

Then you should get out of the middle of the road and take a stand on
one side or the other. It's not an easy thing to do but at least then
you only have to watch the traffic coming from one direction and you
get a lot more respect for taking a stand rather than trying to dodge
issues from both sides.
