Default SIM card in England

Could someone advise on the most economical SIM card to buy in
England for use during a short visit? Or are they all about the same price?
I have an unlocked GSM tri-band phone, which I used previously in
Paris, so I know it works on the 900/1800 frequencies.

All basically the same price. Tesco or Virgin are probably marginally
cheaper.

For something that costs less than 10 USD is it really worth the
hassle?

Okay, thanks. It appears I can just wander in to the first phone
shop I stumble across and buy the card -- perhaps even in Heathrow.
I paid 40 Euros for the card and airtime I bought in Paris last year
(Bouygues Telecom) -- and then never used it! Perhaps I'll do better
this time.

I saw one for £2.99 on the Orange website and you can still use it in other countries if you want to finish the credit. Not sure of the details though.

You should probably pay no more than 5 UKP + Airtime, probably minimum
5 UKP - so 10 pounds should get you service. And yes just about any
mobile phone shop, supermarket (virgin record shops for virgin only)
and many newsagents and similar will be seilling them, you should have
no problem at all finding one.

Neve used it? Well that's silly. You could have made a lot of frivolous
calls.:)
