Default Should i book hotel/hostel in advance? To Western Europe

halow
I plan to go western europe ( my the whole europe ) for 2 months
during Jun and Julai.
Should i book hotel in advance?
Since i haven't actually plan my schedule yet.
If i book hotel in advance, i might lost the flexibility.
Will it be alright if i look for hotel when i arrive there?
Beside, pls tell me the best budgeted guide book to Europe!
Thanks all!

You need Rick Steves' "Europe through the Back Door"
His book is the ultimate for where to stay and what to do.

The best travel guide book to Europe IMO is Rick Steve's Best of Europe or one of his country specific guides (eg Rick Steves Italy). In it he lists all the hostels, their fax and telephone numbers etc.

He provides details of clever budget hotels that give you the spirit of the region without breaking your bank balance!

Aside from the above, he gives a fun, appealing guide to Europe with all the facts you could possibly want but delivered to you in far more relaxed and interesting manner than the other guide books.

Do you have to go in June and July? It is high season.

Hi,

You are correct in that booking in advance will reduce your flexibility. I
have travelled extensively through Europe, and have never bothered to book
ahead unless I am arriving late at night. Even in peak season there is
always somewhere to stay.

As for guide books, Lonely Planet and Let's Go seem to be the most popular,
and as such the places listed are often full. Thats ok though, because these
places will orten refer you to a newer, unlisted place that is of comparable
quality and value. You must remember when you arrive at a place, if it is
full, be polite (even though you are probably tired and frustrated), and
they are more likely to give assistance.

As for a schedule, I would just have a rough idea about how long I want to
spent in what countries, and plan it when you get there. Some spots are
dissapointing, some are more than you expected, so adjust your itinerary
accordingly.

Good luck!

Playoff,

Only book your first night or first few nights in Europe. After that
just wing it.

For a guide book the best budget guide to all of Europe is the Lonely
Planet "Europe on a Shoestring." For a detailed discussion of this one
and most of the others see my page at
http://www.enjoy-europe.com/hte/chap10/guide.htm. There is plenty of
rubbish printed under famous names.

Only book if there is a particular hostel you really want. Especially in
Germany if you want to stay in , for example, Jugendherberge Stahlek, in
a castle overlooking the Rhine, I'd book it. But most of the time you will
be fine. Be aware that th e Hostelling International Hostels, espeically in
Germany are heavily booked by school groups in the summer. A couple of years
ago I could not book ANY of the three hostels in Weimar because they were
full up (there were 5 of us, so we needed reservations most nights; it is hard
to get the family rooms if not in advance. We had to stay in Erfurt instead.
