A short while back someone on this newsgroup mentioned a program (or
something) that prevented pop-up advertismenet from appearing while he
surfed web sites. Where can I find this program, is is freeware, or is it
something I can find within IE5? I am finding these pop up ads are
irritating me more and more!

WebWasher: http://www.webwasher.com/
Proxomitron: http://www.proxomitron.org/

Both are good. Webwasher seems to have mutated in a commercial product with
many options. Proxomitron remains free.

They both work the same way: They act as a proxy, i.e. you install the
software and tell your browser to pull all webpages "through" the software
instead of directly. The software inspects all the webpages you want to
open before sending them to your browser, and it removes all unwanted items
such as popup windows, ad banners etc. What it removes and what not is
freely configurable. Default options are probably OK if you don't know what
it all means.

That's a software which scans your PC for "spyware" products you might have
installed unwillingly. Also good, but not what the OP wanted.

Try POW, found at www.analogx.com. It's free.

No - I have it installed and it eliminates pop-up ads.

I'm being dense, and can't find it on that site - any chance of a direct
link?

Thanks muchly if you can manage it...

It eliminates the pop-up ads that are generated by spyware installed on your
computer (which happens if you (A) Use Outlook or Outlook Express to read
mail, (B) Visit disreputable web sites, or (C) Install goofy crud like
animated cursors, etc., on your machine). Doesn't do a thing for the rest of
them.

Try this :

Or else give me a valid address, I'll send the install file to you.

Do I have a link for you! (I hope.)

www.pricelessware.org

This is the site that collates all the favoured freeware -- entirely
free, with no ads, no spyware, no trial periods, etc. -- as voted
annually by the denizens of alt.comp.freeware.

Alternatively, do a search of the subject headers in that group for
things about pop-up killers.

alt.comp.freeware is a seriously good group.

That was rude of me, not to answer your queston...sorry.

The specific program in there that you should look for is under
"Internet>Web Tool-Popup Killer", and is called "Popup stopper".

If you are referring to Net Spam messages that use Netbios NET SEND
try http://www.directadvertiser.com/ This describes the program
that produces direct advertising and in the middle of the page it
directs you to another page
http://www.directadvertiser.com/optout.html where there are
instructions on how to disable the messenger service.

The messenger service is not the same as Windows Messenger which you
do not need to touch.

Unless you are in a network with a network administrator who might use
the NET SEND function you do not need the messenger service enabled.
Unfortunately, in their wisdom, the geeks who wrote Win2000 and XP
decided all this junk should be enabled on every computer.

Another option is to try using Mozilla instead of IE5. In addition to
killing popups, Mozilla lets you suppress animated images (the basis
for those ultra-annoying flashing ads). Go to www.mozilla.org if
you're interested.

Interesting name.
