Sandals OK?

Would it be okay to only bring sandals (study ones) as the only footwear on a long
trip in Europe? I'm mostly concerned about dress codes in churches if I wear sandals.
How about with socks, too?
Thanks, please post.

I guess so. You certainly wouldn't be the first; some of the Europeans really like
their sandals. Add socks and everyone'll just assume you're German, so you can get
away with anything after that.

Are you backpacking in Europe? If so, you might want to check out what I brought. It
might help you in your packing.

Depends on where you are going...if you come to Italy you'll probably have troubles
in Saint Peter's church in Italy...there are people looking at you before entering
and if you don't have the right dress code you cannot enter. Also italians are really
concern about the way you dress (I know it's silly but...).Have a nice trip.Simona

Can't God prevent people from entering himself if he disapproves of their dress?

They have to have something to cling to.

There is absolutely no problem with sandals in churches. Franciscan friars never
wear any other type of shoe. They also often wear them with socks, especially in
cold weather.
I heard from someone I know that in southern Italy, sandals got her some strange
looks. However I don't know how reliable that is, because there certainly are other
strange things about that woman. Sandals are the normal summer footware where I live,
in central Italy.
Be sure your sandals have a good, thick, non-slip sole for walking on cobblestones.

By the way, in reference to a former thread about proper attire in churches, I
noticed that one of the priests in our parish church yesterday was wearing running
shoes and blue jeans under his surplice at mass.

The dress code at St. Peters has nothing to say about sandals. They don't permit
shirts that leave the shoulders bare (spaghetti straps, tank tops and the like), and
they don't permit skirts or shorts that show the thighs. (Knee-length shorts and
skirts are OK, and short-sleeved t-shirts are OK.) A woman can carry a scarf to cover
her shoulders, or a t-shirt will do. For the legs, you can stick to bermuda shorts or
cut-off jeans that come to the knee, or you can get some of those zip-off pants that
convert to shorts.

Actually, when I lived in the Netherlands, where it rains an awful lot, I used to
wear sandals with socks because the socks dried out a lot faster than shoes.
Maybe that's why Germans wear sandals with socks. But I never wore sandals with socks
when I was wearing shorts, as the Germans do.

I started wearing Birkenstock sandals about five years ago in Holland. Now I wear
them every day of the year. With long pants I wear black socks; with shorts it's no
socks. If the snow or slush is too deep here in Michigan I wear black tennies until I
get to the classroom. There is nothing more comfortable than a well worn pair of
Birkenstocks.

Nonsense. Neither the folks on the entry stairs nor those at the museum nor the folks
on the tour of the cemetery below were bothered by my sandals. I suspect that there
may even be a few religious orders where members are expected to wear sandals.
