You have heard of the 37-year itch? Like the seven-year itch, but
much, much more severe.

Rubbish: we are closer than ever we were. How long have you been
married to one person, then?

Crikey I hadn´t heard of that ... is it much worse that the 27 year itch ? I
heard that it was fairly itchy...a bit like chicken pox... (note: this was
meant to be humorous)

When did "Mrs. John Smith" become "old fashioned"? At one time, "Mrs.
Jane Smith" was used only for a divorcee! (Or are there so many
divorcees, nowadays, that it's safer to assume?)

I am glad that you don't imply that I am a bigamist. Thirty-two years.
And she still surprises me.

And you are expecting that "itch" in 5 years' time? That doesn't say
much for the strength of your relationship.

I would guess 20 years ago? I would have though you run a risk of
having your correspondence returned for correction by some! I dont
think it has anything to do with divorce and a lot to do with
recognising a woman in her own right.

A cunning one, no doubt?

I had a 21 year itch but nobody would let me scratch it. :-(

Who says it isn't? Nor can't?

My little brother is contemplating taking half of his and half of
his wifes (his last is greenbaum, his wife's is grayshield. They're
talking about making it greenshield).

Historically, last names had "value" in their relationship to
families and wealth. As such, and since wealth in western cultures
was often attached (legally often) to the male, that name was
chosen. But my understanding is that there are cultures in which
the wifes name is either taken, or incorporated.

Ooo: aren't they inviting a lifetime of stamp jokes?

Maybe their generation's forgotten entirely about Greenshield Stamps,
but if it was me, I'd opt for "Graybaum"....
