Default Ryanair

I booked 7 seats on a Ryanair return flight to Paris for next week. One of
my friends has had to drop out but one is willing to take his place. I am
horrified to find out that to get the name changed, it would take another
£232. How can it be so much to get a simple name change?

They don't classify it as a "change of name" -- although that's what
they do. They classify it as issuing a new ticket at the walk-on fare.

(A search in this group should turn up a couple of threads on this;
they've got you over a barrel, unfortunately.)

On the other hand, if the existing member of your party were just not
to show up, and in an entirely unrelated incident, a friend of yours
were to make an entirely unconnected booking on the same, or similar
flights, I don't expect the cost would be anything like that

Specifically, walk-on fare less the original price, plus £15.

I worked out the extra £232 based on the current fare from Dublin for the
Tuesday flight.

A quick search brings up Air France Flights departing Thursday for £160

You can go Gatwick to Paris on BA next Tuesday, return (depending on
when your return date is) for about £80 including taxes. It's to CDG,
which won't be where the rest of you are arriving, but it won't cost
£150 to meet up somewhere

Its a well know fact that MOL makes all his money from Irishmen who need to
return home quickly for a family funeral - hence their last minute prices
are sky high

Hey! Irishwomen also attend funerals.

Of course the fares are sky high; it is to be hoped that the planes
will also manage that.

When you say "fact", I think you mean "unsubstantiated myth". Not
quite the same thing

They're selling you a new ticket at full price.

I realise that - I just wonder how they get away with it.

Because that's what every other airline does. Airline tickets are Non
Transferrable (as actually are UK rail tickets, but railways have no
way of checking, airlines do). Ryanair do at least let you transfer the
amount you've paid over to the new ticket, most airlines would just say
tough, lose the old ticket and buy a new one (though new rules imposed
by the OFT require them to give you a credit note if you cannot travel
due to force majeur, but IME they have to be forcefully reminded of this
each time)
