Hello,
My wife and I are celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary with a trip to
Italy in July.
After a long flight I would prefer a nice place to sleep the first night.
Can anyone recommend a good place close to the airport?
Thanks,
Les Wright

Assuming you are travelling to Rome Fiumicino (aka Leonardo da Vinci,
airport code FCO), the airport isn't that far from the city and it's
probably not worth getting an airport hotel for one night, then changing
again the next day to a downtown hotel.
The Rome Airports site at http://www.adr.it/default.asp?L=3 has plenty of
useful info; there's an express train leaving the airport every 30 minutes
and taking 30 minutes to Roma Termini station, costing ?8.80 - from there
you could grab a cab to your hotel.

Are you sleeping somewhere not nice the other nights? :-)
There's a Hilton at the airport.

Les:
I assume:
1) You are arriving at Fiumicino
2) You will be staying in Rome for a few days.
If so, may I suggest it will probably be easier to simply hop on the train
from the airport to the central station and then grab a cab to your hotel.
The express train leaves every 30 minutes and the ride takes about 30
minutes. There is also a train every 15 minutes that goes
Fiumicino-Tiburina-Ostiene (two other rail stations in Rome).

As someone who flies in and out of Rome fairly often, let me recommend that
you not stay near the airport. Just get the trip into the city over with
and enjoy the city until you drop into bed and wake up to Rome the next
morning. It just isn't that hard to get into town and much more anniversary
worthy.
Roma is Roma, the airport is nowhere. Use the venere.com link and maybe try
Campo dei Fiori area or another well-thought of is near the Pantheon.

I'm not sure where you're trip starts, but most flights arriving from
the US arrive in the morning. There are no very exciting hotels near the
airport and downtown Rome, where there are lots of nice hotels, is only
a short distance away. You can take the airport express train, then a
taxi, or if you really are worried about your state of exhaustion, you
can take a taxi directly from the airport. It should cost about 40 Euro,
plus some extra costs for baggage handling and a surcharge if you arrive
at a strange hour. Just be sure you get the regular airport taxis at the
official taxi queue and turn down all offers from people who approach
you inside the airport. Also, it is wise to ask about the price before
you get into a taxi to make sure the driver knows that you are
knowledgeable about the correct prices.

You're one of several who has said the same thing. I just wanted
to add my voice in agreement. Les, by all means do as Barbara and
others suggest and do not stay near the airport.

Why not take the express train to Roma Termini train station? Depending
on the location of your hotel in the city of Rome, you can walk, ride
the subway, or catch a taxi.

I would also say forget the airport stay.
Key Words
: "Anniversary" and "Long Flight".
The Airport Train is nice to get into the city but for 2 people it's
=8017.6 and then a taxi say =8010. Getting to the train at the airport
isn't bad but it's a long hike at Termini from it's distant track to the
taxi queue.
When for ~=8015 more you can have a car & driver waiting for you as
soon as you clear Customs.
www.limoservicerome I've used them twice and there are dozens of
positive posts about them on the Fodor's Forum also. Regards, Walter

spend a few days in Rome and go to whatever hotel you choose -- the
airport hotels are sterile and ugly and there is no point in staying in
them -- unless you have an early morning flight when they can be
convenient
arriving in the morning and being at say the Hilton all day would be a
giant drag -- and if you are going in to the city, then stay in the city
If you are not planning on Rome then get y our car and go around the
city to Tivoli and stay at the Hotel Adriana by the gates of the Villa
Adriana ruins -- spend your jet lag afternoon at the ruins, have dinner
at the hotel and get a good sleep and take off wherever you are driving
the next morning.
