Default Rome: Hotel Room Type Definitions and Hotel Taxes?

What is the definition of Single vs. Double in Roman (or any) hotels? Is a
double usually one-double sized bed? or does that generally mean 2 beds?

Also, how many Euros should I expect to 'give unto Caesar what is Caesar's'
(pay for Hotel Taxes) in Rome?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Most Italian hotels call a room with two beds a "Twin". A double is a
larger bed.
Room taxes are usually quoted with the room rate.

In my vast experience (I live in Italy), Italian double rooms have two
single beds. They ask you if you want a "matrimoniale" room, or whether
you want two beds or one. If you say you want one bed, they push the two
beds together and make them up with king-sized sheets. Most hotels have
staff that speak some English, so you can state your preference.

A single room in Italy usually has only one bed, which is about the size
of an American single bed.

hotel quotes in Italy and I think in most of Europe include taxes -- so
you never get that nasty little surprise that is typical of US hotel
stays

a double room means two people -- it can have one large bed or two
smaller ones Most double rooms have two smaller beds that can be pushed
together or made up together -- but if you want two beds or a letto
matrimoniale you should specify

a single room may just be a double room let to one person or a true
single with a single bed
