Default Riviera in April

Hi:

We are spending 4 nights in the second week of April, arriving in Nice
after a long flight from Asia on our way home to US. We were thinking
of renting a car and driving to a location where we could spend the
next 4 nights relaxing and sightseeing in the area.

Any suggestions as to where we could base ourselves? We would prefer
not to be in a large town with heavy traffic like Nice.

What is the weather like in early April?

Any suggestions will be sincerely appreciated.

Thanks.

We flew to Nice in June 1996. We stayed for a week in quite a nice villa
near the village of Fayence, a short drive west(ish) of Grasse. Very quiet
& peaceful around there, but only about 20 mins' drive to the coast (I think
the nearest places were St Raphael and Frejus, also St Tropez fairly close).
Grasse is worth visiting, also the Gorges du Verdon isn't (aren't?) too far
away. And there are lots of picture postcard French villages nearby where
the old men play boules etc.

I'm not 100% sure about the weather, but I would think it will be fairly
sunny and starting to get warm by then. We were there in early June and it
was about 28C on the coast and got up to about 34C inland. In April it'll
obviously be cooler than that but I don't think you'll freeze (but what if
the Mistral blows???).

Hopefully someone with better knowledge of the climate will respond.

Most years I go to Nice in early April for a conference that is
regularly held there. April is getting toward the end of the rainy
season in Mediterranean climates. Expect cool-ish weather with mostly
sunny days and occasional showers. It's very pleasant by my standards
(but I like cool weather).

Statistically, highs are around 16 C, lows around 9 C, average monthly
rainfall is 64 mm.

Villefranche sur mer and St Jean Cap Ferrat come to mind for coastal. Eze
high on the mountains is another.

Weather should be about 15/20 degrees daytime; you might have a bit of rain
Though
Even if Nice is a large city it is still the most convenient place to be in,
not to mention that you might want to do a bit of walking without having to
take the car all the time
Have a nice flight

Thank you all for some very good suggestions. I gather from your
comments that Fayence, Villefranch sur mer, St Jean Cap Ferrat, Eze
and Nice could be possible bases.

I have heard that St Tropez is crazy during the summer like most of
the coast, but how is it during early April?

With the coolish weather the beaches must be deserted, or is it
pleasant to walk in the sand? How bad is the Mistral?

Regards

Hi - I would strongly suggest St. Jean Cap Ferrat - we stay there all
the time. Price-wise, it is a little more, but you have a beautiful,
peaceful scenic town that offers very easy access to Monte Carlo, Eze,
Villefranche, Nice, etc. I am not as big of a fan of Villefranche -
the port area is very cute, but the town itself is very crowded.
Definitely worth a visit, but for a quiet refuge, I would stick with
Cap Ferrat. we left after 1 night there. Don't miss the Ephrussi
Villa & Gardens on the Cap - gorgeous! We are usually there the end
of May & weather has varied - probably coldest 60F & warmest 80F -
water has always been cold. We love the Voile d' Or Hotel, & you will
have off-season rates, but it still is not inexpensive. You will hear
a lot about the Hotel du Cap, about the same rates - beautiful gardens
& elegant rooms, restaurants, but... at the end of the Cap & a little
remote without the views of the darling litle port in addition to the
Med. At the Voile, it is worth it to pay a little extra for the great
big right deluxe corner rooms, with 2 balconies & views of both the
charming port & town, the Med & the Corniches. 4 - 5 star. Romantic
restaurant. If you need less expensive 3 star suggestions, we like
the Belle Aurore - smallish rooms, but with nice balconies & wonderful
views & a gorgeous pool.

Now that I read, think I cut & pasted to the wrong place - sorry! It
was Villefranche that we spent one night in & left, not Cap Ferrat!
