I downloaded the Rijkswidget a week or so ago now. My initial complaint
that you had to go to the webpage to get more than the few paragraphs of
information on a painting has subsided a bit. It's amazing how much
pleasure you can get even out of a small digital image of a great
painting. Each new day's picture has made me wish my next visit to the
museum was soon...
Today's painting- "Still life with asparagus"- Adriaen Coorte, 1697
(works on most macs and pcs)

It's a stunning painting. I don't remember noticing it last time I was
there. The sexual allusion is a bit passé I think, but I love the play
with light.

Which Tate, or do you mean all of them?
You can pretty much get any painting from any major museum online now- I
just like the whimsical nature of the widget- I suppose if another
gallery does it, I'll try that one too.

I was thinking of getting it, but it looks as though I'd have to
download a 10mg yahoo widget manager first. 10mg takes a hell of a
long time to download by dialup.

I forget how big the widget itself is. Maybe 1MB. Widgets are
automatically supported by Mac OS X 10.4.x, so no extra downloads there.
It's kind of scandalous that some parts of Europe (including the UK)
still don't have ADSL service. I was talking to someone who works in
that business recently, and he said that for the most part, it's inertia
and laziness that prevents a lot of the companies doing it.

In Italy, they claim that the cost of running the wiring to hilltop
communities is prohibitive given the low population density in these
areas. Apparently some of these communities have very archaic
switching systems, which would have to be replaced as well.
When I last checked, Telecom Italia claimed that 85% of the population
had access to ADSL and seemed to think that this was sufficient.
However, given that 85% of the population lives in a limited number of
large cities, this leaves huge areas of the country completely outside
the coverage area. The inland communities of the Adriatic coast were
particularly underserved. They're slowly starting to remedy the
situation, both because people are beginning to rebel loudly and
because alternative systems are being set up by some towns.

I think it was this one I sent you:
www.antidigitaldivide.org
Here is a nonprofit group that is setting up broad band service in Le
Marche. As I understand it, it's not really ADSL, although this
article uses the term. Their representative told me at a meeting in
Corinaldo that it's not asynchronous, which would make the "A" in Adsl
inaccurate.

Does it just put up a random painting of the day?
One thing you could do is fill up a folder with digital photos of
paintings and then have those pics cycle randomly as your screensaver.
Main advantage would be that the screensavers would be full-screen.

Repubblica has a Mondo Mac section!
There's problem with rural areas in the US not getting broadband.
Ultimately the solution may be wireless technologies, either mobile or
something like WiMax.
