What are some good -- preferably small neighborhood type -- restaurants
in Florence. We will be there quite a while. Particularly interested
in out of the way places south of the Arno.
also what about good bars [we are far from hip and young] and great
gelato places [we know about vivoli -- what are a couple of others.

In my opinion there are no really good restaurants in Florence. In
places with too many tourists quality goes down and prices go up.
South of the Arno: I recently had a dinner at "Il Tranvai", piazza
Tasso, an extremely tiny and cramped space, but nice. Before, I had a
dinner at Diladdarno, via de' Serragli 108/r, a more traditional place.
On a higher scale, I had very good reports of Pane e Vino, via S. Nicolò
60a/r, but I still have to try. This place is recommended also by truly
gastronomy lovers (I am not).
About bars, you can occasionally meet me drinking a coffee at Curtatone,
at the corner between via Curtatone and Borgo Ognissanti. I think you'd
like Caffè Italiano in via Condotta (few meters from Piazza della
Signoria).
Ice cream; apart from Vivoli, Perchè no?, via dei Tavolini.

One of my favorites is Le Colonnine.
Stand right in front of Santa Croce and face away from the church. At
the corner to your left is a diagonal street, more like an alley,
called Burgo Santa Croce, going toward the river. Follow that down to
where it ends at a little piazza -- it's the next corner, actually,
but a very long block -- and Le Colonnine is right there on the
corner. It has a modern, spacious interior, one of the friendliest
staffs in Florence, and a good menu at reasonable prices. It's not a
pizzeria, but they have some of the largest and best pizzas I found in
Italy. (And Vivoli gelateria is about the same distance on the other
side of Santa Croce.... The Riso [rice] gelato was my favorite, with
a texture and flavor similar to tapioca.)

my two very favorite restaurants in florence are il cantinone on
via san spirito and mama gina's on via san jocopo. the bistecca at il
cantinone is out of this world and the eggplant parmesan at mama gina's is
the best i've ever had. mama gina's is also open for lunch.

Dear Jenn
In the newsletter I write for www.florencevillas.com I have just written
two lengthy pieces about our favorite inexpensive restaurants in
Florence. Just scroll down to "Newsletter" on the left column, and you
will get a box to subscribe. It's free, and when the next newsletter
comes out it will feature my reviews of 4 very good meals.
The last newsletter covered "Our Favorite Restaurants of the Oltrarno" and
you can read that by clicking on "Newsletter Archive" in the same left
hand column.
I hope you find these articles helpful. They include addresses and
telephone numbers.
Ciao,
Debbie

I went to your site and was very disappointed. I did not find the
article about the restaurants of the Oltrarno. I might have subscribed
to the newletter, but I can't be sure. I did get a lot of unwanted
popups and offers that I did not want.
I am interested in the restaurant information, but don't know if I will
ever see it.

I find it to be a totally ridiculous website, difficult to navigate and
loaded with rather useless thinly veiled advertising. billfrogg In

I was disappointed in it as well -- doesn't make me want to go back to
them to rent, that's for sure

I dined at this restaurant 2 weeks ago, good value for the money
(reasonable). Good wine list. Get there early as this place fills up
quickly.
Another recommendation is Cavalo Nero on Via d'Ardiglione. Actually I
like one better than Pane c Vino.

I forgot to add a couple of good pizzerias. The recently opened
"Funiculì Funiculà" on Il Prato, and "Santa Lucia", via del Ponte alle
Mosse (good pizza but surly waiters). An occasional good pizza maybe an
agreable alternative to a full dinner.

I ate there about a year ago, and also liked it a lot. Rather
than just getting there early, I recommend reserving.

Hi Luca!
I don't suppose you want to take a stab at naming the restaurant in this
picture?
http://www.mceniry.ca/Pic_Eur_2g9Pub/restaurant.jpg
We had a wonderful dining experience here. I am sure it is touristy but we
really enjoyed it. I am still kicking myself for not getting the name or
the street (doh).
I can tell you for sure its in your beautiful city of Florence! Its in the
proximity of the Savoy (Rocco Forte Hotel?).
Any guesses?

Are you sure the photo was shot in Florence? Enlarging the photo I read
a street name along the upper side; it looks something "Borgo S. X",
where X is the name of a saint. X seems to be Francesco, but there isn't
such a Borgo in Florence (the Borgos named after saints are S.Croce, S.
Apostoli, S. Frediano, S. Lorenzo, S. Jacopo).
