We spent the last 2 weeks in April in Bavaria-the people were extremely
friendly, the prices (remember, all taxes and tip included)less than the major
US cities, CLEAN/SAFE and the scenery beautiful.
1)Munich (Hotel Ambiente-)-Deutches Museum (impressive but little English
signage;Bavarian State Museum-needs more staff to be able to open more
areas,nice for a big city -2)Fussen(H.zum Hechten-charming)near
Neuchwanstein which was too new and Disneyesque for me but my wife enjoyed
it,3)Augsburg (H Jakobhof-adequate)-nothing special except for
Fuggeri,4)Regensburg (had to stay in Nitternau)attractive undamaged Roman
era city, great ambience and city museum has good English tape recorder
tour,5)Nuremburg (Hotel IBIS)-terrific English language tape recorder
walking tour of the city PLUS*** German National museum is the finest Middle
Ages (and pre-Roman Germany) art museum I have ever seen...if we had begun
our trip here,we would've visited fewer old churches squinting at carvings
hidden in dark alcoves and allowed a couple of days there,6)Bamberg(H zum
Spatz-creaky floors in our room)-a beautiful city enhanced by English
language tape recorder walking tour of the city-this avid homebrewer/beer
snob, pronounces it the Mothership for the best lagers in the
world,7)Rothenburg(H Golden Griffin)cute town to unwind in.When we go again
we will 1) NOT go as late as April-HOT even by our Gulf Coast
standards(mid70s at 10 PM)without AC,windows must be open and street noise
is unending;2)take the train instead of a car.All the hotels we had were
decent and close to the RR station which in Germany usually means good
location. In fact twice we parked in the RR station long term lot.

Hank,
It sounds like you hit some nice places. I'm printing out your trip
report to take with us in September.
