Caen is pronounced exactly like the French word "Quand". The vowel is a
nasal A.
It becomes a little bit more complicated with words like Caennais
(inhabitant of Caen): the "ae" transforms into a plain A :-)

But Parisians pronounce Chamonix as "Shamoneeks" but natives say
"Shamoonee"!

It's really a variant on the happy smiley and stands for "grin"
or "don't take it too seriously". I'm not really worried about
sounding out phonetics even if they can be a bit confusing.
