If you want good clean basis accomodation try Jesolo, just across the lagoon. It is a huge tourist destination in summer (eight miles or so of golden beach, with all the restaurants, trinket shops and Germans to go with it) but has huge numbers of good basic hotels and is a pleasant ferry ride out of Venice. Catch the ferry at Punto Zabioni (spelling?) The ferry is also a good way to see Venice from the lagoon.

have a look at the 'Dolomiti'; about 2 minutes from the station. most rooms with
toilet and shower. some rooms with toilet / shower on the floor. no comments about
the breakfast...

I found an inexpensive hotel in Venice in the Let's Go Guidebook. It was called the
Minerva, and was near the train station. Some of the rooms had en suite baths and
some didn't. Let's Go had a number of choices, some of which sounded better, but the
Minerva was the only one that would rent me a room for one night during Carnival.

I think you will have better value for money by NOT living in Venice but the
closest city that can be reacehd by train from Venice. I remotely remmember a place
called Padova.
You can easily find a hotel at 1/3 of what Venice hotel charge you. I think Venice is
one of the world biggest rip off.
Cheers.

To each his own but I have never agreed with the idea of staying a train ride away
from the city you traveled so far to see. You save a little on the hotel cost but
you spend it on train travel, inconvenience, time lost that could have been spent at
your desired location, the joy of late night walks at your desired city, late night
dinners etc. etc. Why would you want to travel all the way to Venice and then spend
half your vacation in Padova? Venice is Venice and not Padova and that is why it
costs more.

We stayed once in Mestre, which is only about 10 minutes by train away from Venice.
Took all the magic out of the trip, however.. Bruce

Can't but second that. Try to save somewhere else. Venice is Venice and the late
night walks in darkness when daytourists have left is something very especial. As an
old lady Venice is somewhat aged and best in the left evening when you may have a
imagination of being transferred in time, bear in mind no cars. If you are on a
budget trip I think there are many good alternatives close to the railway station. I
stayed at a hotel in Lista d'Espagna just a few 100m left of the station and found it
very good for money.

I was happy with the room I got in May at the Hotel Stella Alpina Edelweiss. It is a
clean 2* about 100m from the Santa Lucia train station(no bridges to cross!).
Breakfast was included, and I thought the staff were friendly and helpful. The only
downside was that I was on the third or fourth floor, and they had no elevator. It
cost me 88 euros per night including taxes, etc., which is not bad for Venice.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Tourists and Travellers, Citizens of Earth: I rise to praise
the extremely simple, yet profound, statement above and encourage you to henceforth
keep it in mind in a form something like:
Stay where you've visiting. To do otherwise takes all the magic out of the visit.
Well, said, Bruce.
Recently, in another group, a tourist thought it would save some money by staying is
a sub-urb farther from here than the airport. Few in that group agreed. Come t'think
of it, I don't recall any agreement.

Venice actually has a lot of inexpensive hotels, in older buildings that can't be
easily modernized. They may lack air conditioning or elevators, and many of the rooms
may lack private baths, but for basic clean lodging they're perfectly satisfactory.

We are staying at Hotel Canal and Walter (weird name, eh?) which is 90 Euros
inclusive with breakfast, a non-smoking double room, AC, a bar and a garden. I'm
happy! No lift, but only 1 floor up. It's 2 bridges from the P Roma or right across
from the St Lucia train station by way of the bridge. Staff has been helpful and
friendly (especially barbara!)

On a European trip in Jan 02 in Venice we stayed at the Hotel Art Deco. Extreamly
good and value for money. Newly renavated, 10 rooms, ideally situated just off Campo
San Simmon, very close to Academiea, close to Rioalto & San Marco. Use the Academiea
or San Samual vapparatto stops.
