We are looking to do 4 days in Venice in mid Sept and will have a car
and we are looking for a nice, quiet town outside of Venice where we
can park and take the train in everyday. We looked at Mestre, and
although it is close, we want a bit more relaxed place.
Can anyone suggest a small town where we can get a room and then train
it in everyday???
Thanks so much

We stayed in Treviso substantially cheaper than Venice and where the
hotel was located it was quiet.

If I were doing it I would stay at Treviso. It is a very nice place with
enough to see on its own but it is on the main line to Venice for fast
trains. Takes about half an hour or so.
Nearer is Quarto d'Altino, on the Trieste line. and nearer still is Mogliano
Veneto. Not much there and very quiet but only 15 mins from Venice on the
Treviso line. Apparantly, the hotel Campeillo Mogliano is quite good and is
a reaonable price.
Hope this helps.

Man oh man people on this board have been so helpful.
Thanks to both you guys for your recommendation of Treviso. That looks
like exactly what we're looking for. I have already written a few B&Bs.
And I agree with you Zhu De that Treviso itself looks like it has
plenty to see.
Thanks again SO much to both of you for your help.
We leave for 3 months on Sept 3rd and it is starting to feel real! :-)

When we travelled on a Eurail pass we followed advice given to us to stay
in Padua. It is about a 20 minute train ride from Venice, and quite a
nice place.

The opportunity cost of not being in Venice late at night and early in
the morning is very high for me. Most Venice visitors are day
visitors... it gets reasonably calm at night.

Padua (Padova in Italian) is worth seeing in itself. It is on the main
line,so lots of fast trains to/from Venice. That said, Venice is MUCH nicer
early in the morning and later at night when the day trippers have left. The
Grand Canal is "special" in the moon light.

I don't remember it was in 1997. We can't remember the name of the
hotel either, which is a shame as the restaurant served excellent
food, which was also cheap.

Stay in Venice in November like we did once and you won't see anybody.

Why don't you stay in Padova?
If you are interested we have a bed and breakfast in the countryside
outside padova (12 km), near Piove di Sacco about (4 km. 5 minutes
driving) from there you can take the local train that connects
regularly the south-east part of Padova to central Venice (free
parking next to the station, train ticket is 3 euro per person, train
takes 30-40 minutes).
Of one thing I'm sure of, you will not find anything as peaceful as our
house.

Hey Dave
Padua looks interesting for sure and close to Venice but with a
population of 200,000 it is a pretty big city. I would like to get
something a bit quieter.
Thanks

Thanks for the offer Chris. Would you have a website cause it is always
nice to see the places? If not could you drop me a private e-mail and
tell me a little about your place, prices etc. It would be for 4 nights
for me and my wife.
Thanks so much

A twenty minute ride from Venice - AFTER a 20-30 minute ride to the train
station, the 30 to forty minute waitfor the train, and then, of course, the
travel from the Treviso train to the B&B. And, of course, the whole thing
in reverse the next morning.
And all that while Venice is at its best -- the city gets 13 to 15
million visitors a year, and 85% of them are day trippers who leave about
five p.m. You will be there when it is mobbed ( and mobbed is an accurate
description).
Pro-rate the money you are spending to get to Venice, the time you
have available, and rethink an out of town stay.

Are you suggesting the last train out of Venice is at 5p.m.?
If you stay in Venice are you supposed to not go out during the day to
avoid being mobbed?

We have stayed in Venice and in Treviso, we did the trade off and
staying in Treviso won hands down.
