Default Purchase London underground travel pass in US?

Is it possible to purchase the weekly travel pass in the US ? If not,
can it be purchased at Heathrow?

Thanks

I don't know about the ordinary pass, but I understand that a higher priced
pass including admission to various museums is available in the USA.

Yes, or at any other underground station. You will need a pasport sized
photo. However, if buying at Heathrow, the clerk is likely to sell you an
all zones ticket. This may not be what you need if you are only travelling
in central London.

If buying a one-day travelcard, or single/return ticket a photo isn't
needed.

If buying a 7-day or longer period ticket - "a season ticket" - a
photo is needed.

Well, in a way, but they are different animals.

There is the London Visitor Card, available when not in the UK, for
three, four or seven days. for seven days the cost is US $33.00 for
the central zone and $63 for all zones. It's hard to tell what
"central zone" means, but I assume it's zones 1 and 2.

The Visitor Card is good for discounts at many London attractions, but
it's a little vague and most of the best museums are largely free
anyway.

In London you can buy a zone 1 and 2 Travelcard for one week for
UKP19.60 (US 32.10), but you need to supply a passport type photo for
a separate free ID card (which remains good after the Travelcard
exires). The all zone (zones 1-6) Travelcard costs UKP37.20 ($60.93).

The Travelcards can be purchased at the Heathrow Underground stations.

The costs are close enough that you pays your money and takes your
choice.

However, do note that buying an all zones card because it covers
Heathrow may not be the best financial choice, since you can buy a
one-day off-peak 1-6 Travelcard for UKP5.10 and let your weekly card
start the next day. For that matter, you can get a single zone 1-6
Tube ticket for UKP3.70.

I believe that the only pass that you can purchase is an all zones pass.
If you want to go to the trouble passes can be purchased in London for
only Zones 1&2 which covers most tourist use for less money.

No - you can purchase any ticket from a ticket office. You'd want a
single to the boundary of zone 2, and a 1-2 travelcard.

though you might decide just to get the single, and walk near your hotel
on the first day.

I'm going to be there soon, and I can say definitively that there is a
London Visitor Travelcard that can be purchased before and *only*
before you get there. You can get a Zone 1-2 only in 3, 4 and 7-day
varieties, an all-zone for 2, 3, 4 or 7 days or a new Zone 1-2 plus a
round-trip Heathrow Express for 4 or 7 days. There are adult and child
fares. The first two varieties are available through several outlets
like RailEurope.com, but I discovered that they charge a hefty $15
shipping fee! Forget that. But I've since discovered you can buy
these online, shipped for free, directly from the London Transport
people. They will tell you the first day of validity that is available
if you order now. (You need a couple weeks lead time, 10 working days
I think they say.) The only downside (not really too bad) is that it's
billed in pounds, so you want to use a credit card that doesn't tack on
a hefty conversion percentage. Here's the link:

http://www.ticket-on-line.com/

Just click on Tickets and Prices. These cards are good like standard
Travelcards bought in London, on the Tube (and DLR), buses and rail
links within your zones (not including airport expresses, with the
exception of that one type). Because it's a Visitor Travelcard, you
don't need the photocard for the 7-day like the one purchased in London
requires.

I worked out the pricing. We're going to use Zone 1-2 cards for 3
days. The price is GBP 12.80 for the Visitor Travelcard. Daily it
would cost GBP 4.10 for off-peak or 5.10 for peak. (The Visitor
Travelcard has no time restrictions.) So it's definitely a decent
deal. The more days you do, the better deal it is, of course. Even
the one with the Heathrow Express will save you a few pounds versus
buying them separately.

Anyway, all the info you need for the Visitor Travelcards is on that
site. It's possible these are fairly new products, which may be why
the others weren't aware of them.

There has been a recent thread on London Visitors Pass on fodors travel site
and many recent travellers have said you can definitely buy a Visitors Pass
at both Heathrow and Gatwick, not at the usual ticket office but at London
Transport Travel Shop in the arrivals area. This seems to contradict what
the official tube site says ('only available outside of UK'), but there you
are. Perhaps they don't want to upset overseas agents (who make a handsome
profit through a handling charge), but still want to sell to those who
arrive without pre-purchasing it.

Just for the sake of clarity, I want to point out that there is a
product called "The London Pass" which is *not* a Travelcard or indeed
a transport product at all but instead an admission and discount card
for a long range of London attractions. (Looks like a rip-off to me,
really, especially for short period of time. A lot of the places
listed for it are already free. I glanced at the threads on Fodors,
and some others there agreeed with that assessment.) To confuse
matters further, there is a variant of "The London Pass" which includes
transport. Note that the transport it includes is the expensive Zone
1-6 variety, which is unnecessary for the tourist staying in London.
(It's cheaper to do your Heathrow/Gatwick/wherever trips separately and
get a Zone 1-2 Travelcard.) The product you want for your Tube travel
around London is the "London Visitor Travelcard".

I couldn't find the mention on the Fodors site as to which product was
available at the Travel Shop in the airports. Sounds like you mean the
Visitor Travelcards. At any rate, I can't rely on that, because I'm
taking a day flight that arrives at Heathrow around 9:45pm, so I'd be
risking that such shops would be closed by the time I'm through the
passport control and such, I suspect. It is interesting, though, given
what the site says. I suspect that this direct purchase from the
London Transport site is new, as there are several old threads there
that make reference to the $15 rip-off shipping from RailEurope (thus
negating any savings you get from a 3 or 4 day Travelcard vs buying a
weekly in London).

One more tip: If you're going to be in London for only a short time
over a weekend and are thinking about the 3 or 4 day Visitor
Travelcards, keep in mind that you and everyone else can purchase a
Weekend Travelcard for GBP 6.10 in Zone 1-2. This covers all day on
two consecutive weekend days, either Saturday and Sunday or Sunday and
a Monday holiday. Quite a break over the off-peak daily card at GBP
4.10 (x2=8.20). If a weekend is in your stay, you'll undercut the
price of a 3 or 4 day Visitor Travelcard by a pound or two (depending
upon whether on the weekdays you use a peak or off-peak Travelcard),
not that much but there it is.

I have heard that the tube travel card picture is not the same size as a
passport picture. Anyone with a travel card care to comment?

Several years ago I did buy one of the 7-day Travelcards while I was in
London, and it does require the photocard. The photocard takes a
standard passport-sized photo. We went round the corner to a shop that
did a set instantly for us. I still have the photocard somewhere, I
suspect.

This sort of thing seems to be so common in Europe that my companion at
the time who was from the Netherlands actually had several spare photos
of that size for just that sort of occasion when you might need one!
The idea that you'd need spare ones for various reasons was, and still
is, pretty unheard of in the US.

Remember that you can't buy 3- and 4-day Travelcards in London, but you
can buy those as well as 7-day Visitor Travelcards from the
http://www.ticket-on-line.com/ site, with no added shipping charge, if
you have planned far enough in advance (about 2 weeks time for shipping
is the minimum they allow). This is an official service of Transport
for London. I went ahead and ordered our 3-day cards from there. If
you order the Visitor Travelcard, you will not need the photocard.
