Sainsbury dropped to 3rd some time ago, but Asda don't have any
local/metro/central type stores I believe.

If you find yourself there any longer on your next trip, you may want to
look into the 7-day passes for zones 1 and 2. When I was there during the
last week of 2003, they cost £20, IIRC.

Thanks for a great trip report!

Most of the local maps I've seen near tube exits hadn't been vandalised
and were easy to make out. These are always inside the doors, which are
shut when the tube is closed at night, and often near staff points or
ticket offices. In addition, the insides of most stations, particularly
entrances and exits, are well covered by CCTV, which suggests these maps
are freer from the destructive effects of vandals than .

But as with most maps at tube stations or other points, such as subway
systems (for example, Marble Arch), you do see wear at particular
locations as a result of erosion of the material of the map.

I recently ate at Sophie's Steakhouse on the King's Road (New Year's
Day). Didn't have steak, but the meal and the restaurant were very good
and I've seen very positive reviews elsewhere.

Mine will appear real soon.

(And there are lots of other great steak restaurants in London - Smiths
of Smithfield being one).

I'm guessing that you ate at an Angus Steakhouse. DH and I made the
same mistake when visiting London a few years ago. Dreadful service,
terrible food and all far too expensive. In fact, next time I see any
post on this NG about visiting London, I will make a point of telling
the poster to avoid them like the plague. It hadn't occurred to me
before, until I read your post. You've done future visitors a big
favour :-)

A very established chain of Steakhouses were slated on a UK TV consumer
programme a few years ago. ( Watchdog or Esther Rantzen), Over appalling
Hygiene Standards ...The kitchens etc were really disgusting. Even years
later I would never ever eat in one.

Sorry - I did know that but somehow forgot when I was writing my
earlier post

I didn't know that, but it would help to explain why I see fewer Asda
outlets around than Sainsbury or Tesco.

I would never go near a steakhouse.

Harrods is an expensive shop and £15 for a sundae is expensive by
my (Londoner) standards. Glad you enjoyede yourself!

There is at least 3 "Steakhouse" chains in London. Angus Steakhouse,
Aberdeen Steakhouse and another one with a similar "Scottish" name.
They all look alike and they all offer lousy food at high prices.
If there's any justice, they'll go out of business soon.

Get a small compass and check it when leaving the station. It makes a
big difference.
