Hello everyone,
would anyone know if there are luggage lockers or a luggage depot in the
Zakopane station (or around). I'd like to take a hike into the Tatra's, but
don't want to take all my luggage. Thanks a lot.
Regards,
David

Yes there is - or at least it used to be and the official timetable
still says so.

I'd allow more than a single day for that, but if you are in a
hurry... 8-)

I'm taking more time: I'll stay for the night in a hotel or hostel in the
Tatras. But I have quite a lot of luggage with me, so I'll only take what
I'll need for the night and leave the rest in Zakopane.

David

There is definitely one at the train station, which is near the bus station.

One or two nights in the Polish Tatras should mean you cover most of it. It
is fairly easy hiking/climbing, but the views are incredible. The trails are
very well established, and colour coded so that it's impossible to get lost.
It also can get crowded up there.
Private rooms are good in Zakopane, but make sure you get one close to town.
Also, if you catch the chairlift up (recommended), get there before 8:30 am
to avoid long queues.

I wasn't looking for lockers, but I did stay at a good-value hotel almost
opposite the station (or slightly further along the road): you may be able
to do a deal there if there are no lockers or left luggage.

When I used the lockers in Warsaw train station I saw a notice taped up on
each locker, but as I don't know any Polish I couldn't read it. I put my
stuff in a locker and put the money in and as I was retrieving my ticket a
young woman came over and asked me a question in English. Whatever the
question was, I didn't know the answer and she went away. I looked again at
the notice for some reason and wrote down what it said.
When I got back to London I showed my transcription to my wife's close
friend, who is Polish. She laughed at my story and said the notice warned
users of the lockers to keep their locker tickets concealed as they came out
of the machine, because gypsies tended to hang 'round the lockers trying to
see and memorise the code numbers on tourists' tickets, later stealing their
luggage.
Well, if that's the case why didn't they repeat the warning in English: or
were the notices put there by the gypsies so that only foreign tourists
would fall prey to their scam? (Foreign tourists would (1) presumably have
more valuable stuff and (2) would go home and not be available to testify
against them.
