Whitby is saturated with OAPs on coach trips.

It is the OP you should be asking this.

And that is my point. You should be asking him
what he prefers, NOT telling him.

Most journeys are not "Great journeys of the World"
but IME the first journey in a new country by a different
mode is always exciting, no matter how interesting the
scenery.

here we go again "I".

"I" happen to be completely the opposite. I really like
one day travelling, one day (or less) in a town, and hate
4 or 5 days in a town the size of (for example) York.
There just isn't enough to do without doing it again
I attach no value to a different cafe/resturant/bar if the
rest is the same

You have no idea which camp the poster fits into
so don't make the assumption

Aside from the trip to N Wales I don't think that his itinerary
was particularly difficult.

We did a three week - 7000 km trip around California, Utah, Arizona
It was exhausting, but as you say one wants to see as much as possible.....
I prefer a more relaxed itinery

Hello and thanks so much to everyone who wrote. On the basis of all the
great suggestions, I am revising my plan as follows:

Day 1 - flight from Seattle
Day 2, 3, 4, 5 - London
Day 6 - morning train to York, spend afternoon there
Day 7 - morning in York, get rental car, start driving in a
Southwesterly direction!
Day 8 through 11 - spend these four days seeing as much as we can of N.
Wales and the Cotswolds area. By the evening of Day 11, end up in Bath
Day 12 - Bath...probably coach back to Heathrow in the evening
Day 13 - fly home.

I am thinking of making reservations for the four nights in London, and
the single nights in York, Bath, and at Heathrow. I am hoping it won't
be difficult to find lodging in late October for the four unscheduled
nights, and it will make it a little less rigidly structured for us. As
you can see, I've added two days to the length of the trip as well.

What do you think?

Thanks again so much.

Just be aware that your trip will probably coincide with school half-term
holidays, which can make accommodation a little busier than usual. It
shouldn't be a major problem, though, outside family-resort kind of
places.

That logic might rule out Bath and York too, unfortunately!

Tourists in York aren't mainly OAPs they are from all age groups.
Maybe OAPs go to Bath to take the waters?

I might add that I've only been to Whitby once, and that was a tourist.
I was 16, travelling with a couple of friends from near Darlington. It
was a nice day IIRC!

We go to the Whitby area two or three times a year. The sun always shines on
Whitby :-)

Pity it didn't make it to nearby Scarborough the only time we went! I
think there was sunshine for a minute. I did enjoy the visit though, but
would like to go back when it's sunny. The east coast usually does
better for sunshine, doesn't it? I've had an odd relationship with
Aldeburgh in that on the last 4 or 5 visits there, usually only a day or
two, it's been sunny- even in mid-winter!

It is a popular place for young slags to get disgustingly drunk. There was a
film on the BBC website of Micklegate full of drunken slappers.

The bits between the moors and the sea have a micro climate.

We used to stay in Goathland, that had it's own sunny climate too.

It has been sunny every Monday this year in Zuid Holland.

and gales on Saturdays and Thursdays

For a change we had a big thunderstorm in the middle of last night.
