External? I thought your complaint was *internal* expansion?

> SCSI did not give the easy access you needed to run external devices.

I guess that a SCSI port on the back of the box isn't easy enough for
you, but this is a difference in perspetive: the end-user doesn't
have to care how much of a pain in the ass it was for the hardware
developer to figure out how to make things work. In essence, the
whole philosophical underpinnings of "plug-n-play" is that the product
developer takes on the pain so that his end user customer's life is
made easy.

> By 1995 was way to late. At least 10 years to late.

Sorry, but twelve years is a virtual eternity in the electronics
industry.

For computers, its easiliy 3-4 generations, which would be the
equivalent of 35 years of development in the Auto industry. If we
look back 35 years in cars, Honda and Toyota were virtual nobody's in
1972, and the Big 3 was about to get first Oil Shock with huge land
yachts in their inventory.

So now we're back to internals again.

> I wrote part of the FW for the drives so was intimately involved in them

Since Apple dropped that back in 1999, this work would have been done
at least 8 years ago. Your "pain" is noted - - now get over it
already.

That's flawed historical causality.

Macs and PCs were originally around the same price, and were both
'closed' systems from having a Copyrighted ROM BIOS.

What changed was that Apple was able to legally defend their
copyright, whereas IBM failed: IBM was using litigation techniques to
shut down PC cloners, but then lost in court to Phoenix and Lloyd's of
London (not Compaq). It was this failure to legally defend their
Copyright that opened the door for the market to effectively steal and
copy IBM's design, without which, the whole Clone race would have
never started.

And IBM's ROM BIOS would *still* be under copyright today, had it not
been for the outcome of this lawsuit. That became the lessons-learned
by the Music Industry, which is why they've gotten the US to make
reverse-engineering attempts to break DRM illegal.

"Mac Pro
2 GHz processor
1 GB RAM
250 GB hard drive
NVIDIA Graphics
20" monitor
16x dual layer DVD
Airport XTheme Wifi

PRICE $2948

From Dell computer web site:

Dell Dimension E521
Windows Vista Home Premium OS
2.13 GHz Intel Duo E6400 processor
1 GB RAM
250 GB hard drive
20" monitor
similar DVD read/write
NVIDIA graphics, similar capacities
Netgear Wireless Broadband Router

PRICE $1377"

As far as I can tell 2,13 GHz is usually faster than 2 Hz. And a Duo
E6400 implies two processors.

Now what didn't I see?

It was that the CPU's were very, very different.

Simplistically, it was:

$1700 worth of Xeon 5100 "Woodcrest" dual-core 64bit CPU's (2 @ $850
each)
-vs-
$200 worth of E6400 "Core 2 Duo" dual-core 32bit CPU ($200 each)

This $1500 desparity in CPU wholesale costs accounts for 95% of the
difference in retail prices.

Google "Intel Duo E6400 processor"

then look at:
http://tinyurl.com/wr9yb
and particularly the bit that says:
"Every Mac Pro offers the incredible power of two 64-bit Dual-Core
Intel Xeon Woodcrest microprocessors."

That's true, especially when Martin is working "in tandem" with Magda...

The same thing Barbara and Martin didn't. Jeez, this gets boring.

I really don't understand why you would resort to such silly rubbish
to apparently defend a product that I wasn't even criticizing.

but is it USD1500 faster?

What is the effective improvement in performance of applications.

How many people really need or use this incredible power?

20 years ago I had the fastest PC in a department, an incredibly powerful 20 MHz
Compaq that had a list price of about EUR 9000.
