The RATP site used to have some fine maps and was easy to use.
Now they've gone to this citefutee thing and kept it in French
and put up crappy GIF maps instead of PDF.

There used to be a whole series of PDF maps. I've actually
downloaded them.

Oh. That's better. But I have, in the past, downloaded several
varieties of PDF maps.

Argh. Tht's what I mean about making the pages harder to use. Why
should I have to click on an anchor for a pass I don't want to
get maps I do?

I guess there is a little note up there that says to do it.

(mumble, mumble)

Okay, takes you to
http://www.ratp.fr/ParisVisite/Eng/Pla_q/f_pla.htm which is what
you really want, and is the same old maps page as before, but now
in a new place. I think.

The PDF is still there. You can reach it from a link above the GIF version.

But change "gif" to "pdf" in *both places* in the above URL, and
guess what you get.

Also, if you start at http://www.ratp.fr, select "English", obey the
text in the first paragraph by selecting the PARIS VISITE link for
maps, then select the diagonal word "Maps" at the top of the page,
and finally select "Zone map", you get

http://www.ratp.fr/ParisVisite/Image...eaux/zones.pdf

The "Maps" web page also offers GIF versions, but you need JavaScript
enabled to get to them, I think.

I have not attempted to compare the two PDF versions of the map to
see if there are differences in content as well as presentation style.

If my RER stop (Malesherbes) is beyond the carte orange zone, how and when
do I pay the extra tariff?

I know. They weren't even locked PDFs. I seem to recall telling them this;
maybe they listened.

In any case, in response to the original poster's question, there _is_ a map
specifically of the fare zones available on the site.

Because it's a French site. Most French Web sites are overly complicated,
difficult to navigate, and rely far too much on client-side scripting and
ActiveX components like Flash.

You buy a specific ticket for that zone at the beginning of your trip.

You don't. You pay for a full ticket from your origin to your destination. Or,
you get a carte orange coupon that includes the zone your stop is at. You can
also upgrade a coupon to add additional zones.

This one also shuts down my computer.

I will be a month in Paris staying out in the 20th Em -- what pass
should I get?

Not necessarily. A few years ago before they introduced the
citefutee pages the RATP site was quite easy to use. I think the
current state of the site represents a global trend that happens
when the owners of a site turn it over to "professional" web page
designers. A web page designer has nothing to do if he can't keep
redesigning the pages, even if they don't need redesigning.

The London Underground pages have suffered from the same malaise;
eight years ago they were attractive and easy to use, and I loved
the little animated Tube train that stopped at the platform on
the homne page.

No surprise there. I think the average Web designer in France is only 14
years old, at least in mental age.

A monthly Carte Orange will do, zones 1-2 or 1-3.

do these monthly passes only run on the first of the month -- or are
they point to point e.g. if we get one on July 15 is it good until
August 15?
