Default Overnight Train from Barcelona to Cannes

OK - I'm about to book a train ticket on eurorail.com from the US (for
my trip in June) and I haven't travlled by rail in Europe before. The
website doesn't give a lot of accomodation. I will be going 1 way
from Barcelona to Cannes on June 22

Recommendations - First Class or Second Class???
Couchette or No Couchette???

I'm just going 1 way from one destination to another and want a nice
safe trip where I don't have to be worried about being robbed while
falling asleep. I know that it leaves around 6:38pm on Sunday evening
with a couple hour layover in Portbou/cerbere and arrives in Cannes at
7:00am the next day. Also, should I wait to book this until I
arrive??? I'm travelling in peak season...

Any help would be appreciated???

Answer: 2nd class couchette.

1st class sleeping accomodation costs an arm and a leg. Speaking of legs,
it is just as LONG as couchette accomodation, though you will meet fewer
potential friends--though for the most part you will be asleep anyways.
Couchettes, which usually run about $20, are the only reasonable way to go.
In fact, they are cheaper than just about any hotel. 1st class sleeping
compartments tend to be MORE expensive than the hotels I tend to stay at.

Couchettes can generally be booked up to 60 days in advance. If you arrive
in Barcelona with a week to stay before you want to travel, then you should
be fine booking it there--unless you are travelling on the Friday night at
the start of a major holiday period--and this should not be a big problem on
the Sunday night you are going. I would wait, and then book it at a train
station as soon as you get to Barcelona, but if you want airtight safety,
you could pay a bunch more and book it now.

The first thing to know is that your are probably going to pay
way too much if you buy your tickets from eurorail.com. The SNCF
site indicates that Cannes->Barcelona, with couchette, should be
no more than EUR 72 second class.

It's not completely clear, but it appears you have no choice; it
will be a night train to Cannes and there will likely be nothing
but sleeper compartments.

Two things to realise:
- The price is inflated. Raileurope aparently wants 123$ for this trip,
where another poster already indicated it should only cost about 75 EUR.
- Raileurope is a really bad site to plan your trip, as it is completely
unaware of the existence of about 95% of the available trains in Europe...

Do a search on http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/e for example,
and you will find three daytime connections that raileurope won't tell
you about. The most interesting seems to be to leave Barcelona 8:45,
arrive Nice 19:07. With 1 3/4 hour layover in Montpelier, around
lunchtime, which I think is a lot more agreable then Cerbere around
midnight... And the scenery along this route is aparently quite attractive.

Greetings,

Krist

I add:

If it is available, you might prefer a first-class couchette. The only
difference is that second class has six bunks per cabin, while first class
has four.

That's two fewer people who might wake you up moving about in the middle of
the night or keep you awake snoring.

The bunks are the same size.

The difference is price is around $15-20 U.S. If space is avialable you can
upgrade to first class on board.

Reservations for couchettes or sleeper cars are strongly advised.

Perhaps I err in thinking of couchette compartments as
"sleepers."

Err, seated or couchette accomodation, no sleepers on train 5508.

23:25?

There are bunks on which you may or may not be able to sleep but IIUC,
'sleeper' refers to 'voiture-lits'.
