One day in Vienna

I'll have a one-day stopover in Vienna in September (land 9:40AM on
Sunday, leave 11:00AM on Monday). Any suggestions on what should be
priority to see during such a short time? And anything particular to
be on the lookout for for shopping (and places to shop)? Would a taxi
be the quickest way to get downtown? I plan to drop my luggage off and
then spend the rest of the day seeing as much of Vienna as I can.
Any suggestions on a place to stay are also welcome. I don't need
anything fancy. Just clean with ensuite bathroom. Because of my
limited time, I'd prefer something very central--but not too expensive
either!
Thanks!

I'd start in the St Stephan's/Graben areas and work my way from there.
Perhaps the Hofburg Palace, more likely you'll be caught up with the
environs per Hofburg/ Graben.
One day pass on the metro should work.....its a 24 hour pass from first
stamp.
24 hours just doesn't work so just enjoy and relax.
