Not true. You can drive onto the main part of Venice and park in
the Piazzale Roma.

You can also not only park, but also drive, all over the Lido,
which is part of Venice (but you have to get your car there by
ferry).

You can also drive in Mestre, which is the mainland part of
Venice.

There are at least two huge garages, one right on the Piazzale Roma and one just
off the bridge, about 100 meters from the main stop for Vaporetto No. 1. I think
they run about 30E per day.

Contrary to some comments, I count about a train every hour between
Firenze and Siena in my 2003 'Orario', altho to be sure most of them
are 'R' trains, i.e. second class only. The main part of Venizia is
not that large, you could probably explore the better part of it on
foot in two to three days. Heh, some of us desert dwellers find
Venezia a little damp and not as appealing as, say, Bologna. I must
admit tho, I would consider a northern Italy tour to be
Milano/Verona/Padova/Venezia and points north - such as Bozen, Meran,
Brixen, Udine, Brenner, Domodossola, etc.

Hi Luca

I recall parking up at some place called Bella Vista or Bellevue or
something
similar (spelling?) on a hill south of the river. There's a bus terminus
there,
and we simply caught the bus into town and back.
