owners association, has offered a ban in restaurants soon and a ban in bars not
before 2010. As I understand it the government is going to legislate a ban in
both, now. Serves the Horeca lot right for not introducing a voluntary ban by
1-1-2007 as agreed.

was pleased to see that Spanish restaurants are non smoking. Madrid
airport seems to have failed though, as the smoke drifts everywhere.

That's very interesting news, thanks! Any hope for Germany at some
point? :)

The changeover here is going to be interesting. I was in quite a nice
pub in London last night near Warwick Road, and I'd say half of the
clientele were smoking, which wasn't pleasant, even with pretty good
ventilation.

I do have to say that having given up smoking I now find an evening in a pub
more trying than I used to and will be using them more when the ban comes
in.

It will also make eating in pubs less of a lottery. If you get a seat next
to the pub 'chimney' your meal is going to be spoiled, smoker or not...

Good point. I'd note that quite a few good dining pubs I know tend to
have separate areas, but there is the peeing in the pool analogy! Almost
all of the good restaurants we go to in Manchester are completely
non-smoking now, but usually allow smoking in the bar area.

I gave up smoking almost 37 years ago. About 20 years after I gave up I became
strongly allergic to cigarette smoke. Not something made up in my mind, but
diagnosed by the chest department of the local hospital.

but it looks like sitting outside a pub having a pint on sunny day will be not
so nice.

The spineless German politicians are still squirming under the thumb of
Europe's most powerful tobacco lobby. After spending years drafting a
federal smoking ban law in restaurants, they suddenly discovered it was
unconstitutional anyway, because only the individual federal states
could pass such a law, making a farce of the entire effort. The current
situation is that there is now an agreement to have a general smoking
ban in restaurants, discotheques and public bars, except that each state
can make its own exceptions, and sure enough, some of them are. In
particular, any restaurant can have a closed-off smoking area marked on
the door with an "R" (R=Rauchen=smoking) There is at least finally
agreement on banning smoking in schools, kindergarten (Yes, really!!),
public biuldings, theatres, and public transport.

The German government has been notable for taking legal action AGAINST
legislation banning cigarette advertising in the EU, notably in 2003 and
2004.

Because of the thick smoke my wife and I have pretty much avoided
pubs in the UK. I once walked through one in Mayfair to find the
loo and almost choked on the smoke. It felt like I should carry a
machete to cut through the fog.

We have the same problem here in Arizona, but the new no-smoking
law goes into effect in a couple of weeks.

I was a three-pack -a-day smoker, but I gave up some twenty-odd
years ago. But now, twenty years later, I have COPD.

When I went quits, for a year or two the smell of cigarette smoke
drifting by, especially, after a good restaurant meal, had me
wishing for an after-dinner cig. But now I can't stand smoke; it
makes my eyes itch and water and gives me a headache and sore
throat.
