Next summer my husband and 2 children are planning to visit Italy for
a month. The idea is to rent an apartment in Rome, rent a car, and
take day trips to other cities.
If we want an apartment that is conveniently located, in a safe and
pretty neighborhood with restaurants, markets, major sites nearby,
which neighborhood would you suggest? Thanks.

I would suggest Trastevere, which is a very nice neighborhood on the
other side of the Tiber from the historical center of Rome, just south
of Vatican City. However, I have a feeling that finding a parking
spot anywhere in Rome will be a major enterprise. Maybe you want to
reconsider the car. If your day trips will all be to cities, rather
than rural areas, you will find the train convenient and inexpensive.

The best place to stay in Rome is in or near the historic center, where you
can walk to almost all the sites. Traffic in and around Rome is busy; I
don't think taking day trips out from the center and back in is a practical
idea. Better to use the train. If, on the other hand, you stay in some far
out neighborhood, where it's easier to get out of the city, you'll be
spending a lot of time going to the center. And you won't have that natural
sightseeing you get as you pass historic sites going to and fro.
Good day trips by train from Rome are Ostia Antica, Orvieto, Naples, even
Florence. And some people do Pompeii, though it makes for a long day.
But I'd recommend splitting up your stay, some days in central Rome without
a car, then some days based in a small town, with a car.
How old are your children? Have you looked into agriturismos?

I really like Trastevere too. It's got great eating, some good night
spots, lots of pedestrian friendly areas, and a train station.
Oh, and there's a small gelateria on Isola Tiberina that's good too.

Another vote for Trastevere here, but I also rilly like Ostiense.
