Default Need some advice here..

Ok,this is the problem: Going from USA to Paris then on to
Braunschweig, Germany. Have done this trip before but had the Eurail
pass. This time taking grandaughter. From what i gather it is
approximately $150 to make the train trip from Paris to Braunschweig.
Would i be cheaper to just fly? If so where would i look for plane
passage in that area? Or, would i better off just getting a muliple
ticket to begin with from USA, that would cover the whole trip from
USA to France , on to Germany and then home from Germany?
I would really love to take her on the train trip since she would get
to see a lot of the country that way. That is what i did the last
time, ride was almost 8 hours but very nice. Or, possibly i have the
wrong info on the fare from Paris to Braunschweig by train? Anyone
possibly know how much it actually is?
Thanks for any help....

It depends what you want, I guess. All things being equal, it sounds like
you would prefer the train.

I am not sure what the cost of the train would be, but what you posted seems
reasonable. I am pretty sure that a Paris-Hamburg round trip is
approximately $320 with KLM, but it stops in Amsterdam. It costs a little
more with Lufthansa, but the flight is direct.

Another option that you may want to think is to get a US to Germany flight,
and travel by train from the landing airport to Braunschweig. (Unless the
"experience" HAS to be from Paris.) Lufthansa does run promotions, and you
can also get nice fares from Expedia.com and Sidestep.com. I recently
purchased my tickets from these outfits for a Chicago-London-Milan flight.
I purchased the tickets separately and saved money. If you are real daring,
you can bid on Priceline.com and try to stay within your budget (if the bid
goes through).

As for exact train prices, you should probably consult the French or German
railways web sites.

If this is her first trip to Europe, then I think you would be a fool to
consider taking her on anything but Thalys and ICE, merely for the
educational experience of comfortable, quick, reliable, long-distance public
transportation. Just maybe those ignorant Europeans have some good ideas
after all. ;-)

I'd also highly suggest a layover in Cologne for several hours. To pass
through Cologne without ever having seen that Cathedral which is just yards
away from the trainstation is sinful, regardless of one's religion.

Yes, it has to be from Paris. I want to take her to Paris and then on
to Germany. I have family in Germany that she has never met. The
original trip was just going to be Germany, but i figured what the
heck, take her to Paris also for a few days. She is finally old
enough to go and enjoy and learn from the trip. I took this same trip
this past March with a friend and i think she will love the train
trip. As i said earlier, the last time we had the Eurail pass, and i
really did not know what the price of the trip from Paris to
Braunschweig was. I found a site that tells you the time schedule of
Thalys and Ice but not the price. I will have to call them i presume,
was hoping the price would be on there, or someone might have another
site to search. Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

We changed trains in Cologne the last time i took this trip.
Unfortunately we did not see the cathederal. We were exausted, had
for the the past 8 days walked through London and Paris and i just
wanted to get to Germany to my family and rest up lol..That was not to
happen either, my friend had never been to Germany and we marched all
over Germany lol. I was born in Germany and have spend a lot of time
visiting there, but when you take someone with you that has never been
forget the resting lol..And this time taking a 12 year old i can only
imagine what is going to happen. 12 year olds manufacture energy
    :-)..
Is there a place at the train station in Cologne to leave your luggage
for a few hours while waiting for another train, so we can visit this
cathederal?
Thanks for any help.

The Cathedral is just outside the main trainstation, so if you have a
problem taking your luggage so short a distance, then perhaps you have too
much of it. (smile)

I travel with one carry-on size rolling bag that will fit under an airline
seat so I can take it wherever I go with little hassle. I don't take
anything that can easy be purchased, used, and left in Europe. I carefully
choose clothes that can easily be washed by hand in minutes each evening and
will air dry quickly, so I only need two changes of clothes to travel for
months at a time, without ever needing a laundromat. The freedom and
convenience of packing light cannot be overstated.

But in case you fail to heed this advice, perhaps someone might chime in to
describe the left-luggage situation at Köln Hbf?

After you arrive in Frankfurt, your granddaughter can travel with you in 2nd
class on regional trains (IRE, RE, RB, S-bahn) for no additional cost if you
choose one of the tickets for travel after 9am on weekdays (hes5enticket-EUR
25) and all day on weekends (Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket EUR 28). The weekday
tickets are offered for travel within the specific region it's purchased and
for limited neighboring locales as specified, however the weekend ticket is
a national offer. Both tickets are good for up to 5 people traveling
together or parents/grandparents with their children/grandchildren (any
number of kids though age 14).

http://www.bahn.de

Note (to anyone): there are similar regional tickets offered throughout
Germany, but the terms and prices vary somewhat. In Bavaria, for example,
the BayernTicket is valid only from 9am-3pm. Throughout Europe there are
many similar local/regional trainfares that are usually cheaper than the
daily cost of a Eurail pass, so a little advanced trainfare research can
save travelers quite a bit of money by choosing a cheaper Eurail flexipass
only for use on long, expensive, international routes and high-speed or
night trains.
