It was a comment made by friends, who live near Nice.

Not exactly shoes but I have found that Birkenstock trekking sandals
work well. Alas, the Ottawa version that I like is being withdrawn.
Fortunately I have an extra pair so I will last a few years. I am sure
that they will market a decent replacement. With Thurlo socks they have
done well for me.

I haven't tried Ecco but finally gave up on my pair of Clarks. The
padding removed the lateral stability that I need.

last ones walking from Mykonos town to Ano Mera (incidentally, a waste of

Similar problems here - diabetic; and often leather shoes, however
well-padded, cause problems with chafing.
My solution - cheap, Spanish suede "fell boots". Advantages - they're
cheap! They're pliable, and with proper walking socks they're very
comfortable indeed.
Disadvantages - not particularly waterproof, so on a long hike through
boggy terrain, you're going to get wet and soggy feet!
Make sure also that if you buy any, they have "Commando" soles that
give a grip on rocky/slippery terrain.

I'll second the Tevas. I wear 'em with socks in cooler climates -- unless
it's raining hard they work great. My feet tend to swell when I travel, so
sandals are much more flexible.

Unpopular as they are with most folks .. I choose Birkenstocks. They
now come in many styles beside sandals. Though the standard monk side
buckle style has carried me through Italy for thirty years.
On my last trip I bought a pair called Swiss Comfort; (I know, sounds
rather like a laxative) very much like Birkies but lace up and quite
sporty...though so is the price...but comfort is a travel necessity.

Never heard of them. They look hammeringly expensive, though.
I'm not a trekker ... just a quiet walker ... but I do need a bit of
durability because I tend to wear the same shoes day in day out when I
travel.

I bought a pair in Germany in 1992. They were a reasonable price there.
I still use them.
