Default Need help with Germany/Austria itinerary

I am planning a short trip to Germany and Austria. As of now, in
Germany I intend to spend about 2 days each in Berlin, Dresden, and
Munich (and if possible a day in Nuremberg). In Austria, my plan is to
spend one day in Salzburg (maybe I will settle on a day trip from
Munich) and 2 days in Vienna.

I would like to land in Berlin and depart from Munich (vice versa is
also fine with me). I was thinking of doing Berlin - Dresden - Munich -
Salzburg and back to Munich. However, I am not sure how to fit in
Vienna. Should I travel from Dresden to Vienna and then Salzburg and
finally Munich? Also, is there a way I can squeeze in Nuremberg,
without going too much out of the way?

What are the public transportation options that I have for all these
legs? I checked the bahn.de site and found that the trains are
convenient. However, are there are any less expensive alternatives?

Thanks in advance.

I'd just hop on the train in Salzburg and back again. They run every hour
or so with slower trains in between.

Doing it by train is possible (I did most of those stretches, but not in
a single trip), but the overall distance is large, so flying might save
time. I'm not an expert of low cost flights to help you.

The most logical order would be Vienna- Salzburg- Munich- Nurnberg-
(Berlin-Dresden). I'm not sure of the latter since I've never been in
Dresden (I was in Berlin when the Wall was still there, locked train
from Frankfurt). You could even think to make Salzburg as a stopover,
either get there in the evening, sleep there, and depart the next late
afternoon to Munich, or leave Vienna early in the morning, visit
Salzburg and continue to Munich at the end of the day. (Personally I did
Salzburg-in-a-day as a day trip from Innsbruck, and next day moved to
Linz).

Coburg and Bamberg are nice diversions on the Munich-Nurnberg-(Berlin)
route.

Full price train tickets are expensive. Depending on your plans,
whether you can commit yourself to particular trains in advance,
whether you can avoid peak times and what your route is, there are
various special offers that are often a lot cheaper.
It may even be worth your while getting a Bahncard 25 which
costs about EUR50/year and gives 25% discount in Germany
(combinable with some other savers).

Linz must've made you wish you'd stayed longer in Salzburg.

Hi there:

I used to live in Nuremberg, and travelled to Munich and beyond many
times. Both cities are in Bavaria, so you can buy a single Bayern
ticket for 17 Euros. It allows you to travel anywhere in Bavaria from
9 a.m. until 3 a.m. the next day. With it you can also ride the
trolleys and busses in town in either city. My favorite restaurant in
Nuremberg is the Bratwurst Hausle near the marketplace, walking
distance from the train station. Also, some friends own a brewpub a
few blocks further up toward the castle at Bergstrasse 19. It's called
the Altstadthof, ask for Herr Engel or his wife "Siggie".

Auf wiedersehen,

In fact Linz was just a place where we had an hotel near the station.
We used it as a basis (cheaper than Wien) for day trips to the Wachau,
Wien and Graz.

Good for that, but that's about it.

The train is the cheapest alternative if you make use of special
offers:

Look up the following on bahn.de

*SparNight - night train from Berlin to Vienna for €30 one-way,
limited spaces, needs to be bookend in advance

* Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket - You can travel anywhere in Germany for
€30 for a whole day, but you may only use slower trains (not ICE) and
it's only available on weekends. Does not need to be booked in advance.
It's valid for up to 5 people, so if you can find others on the station
to share it with you, it's potentially an EXTREMELY cheap way of
travelling: ie. Berlin-Munich will only cost you €6 one-way, but it
will take approx. 10 hours instead of 6. If you don't mind sitting on
the train chatting and reading a book (even regional German trains are
very comfortable) then it's worth considering.

Otherwise, you can go by bus (www.eurolines.com) but this buses are
slow, more expensive than the Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket and a lot
more uncomfortable.

You could fit in Vienna by taking the direct train from Dresden to
Vienna via Prague (about 9 hours), or better, the night train from
Berlin to Vienna (where the special offer is available) and then make
your way back

Or you could get a cheap flight with www.hlx.de.

If you're lucky, you may find a flight from Berlin to Munich for €40

Ohh Tim,

you know there are couple of good motorbike trips from Linz, don't
you? And I know some more (but as I've seen last monday riding my
mobike are under construction) as you do.

Give it a chance, its a lot better than 20 years ago ;-)
