The ones on the cliff top in Sorrento.

There are a lot of character hotels, as martin points out several including
the venerable Excelsior Vittoria are amazing with location views to die
for. Then there are the famous botique hotels of Positano and Ravello. How
much money are you thinking of spending?

I can't remember the name of the one we stayed in, but the ones along
the cliff top all have the same view - a sheer drop into the sea, not
good if you have vertigo and have doubts about Italian construction
standards :-)

This one is typical

State run??? Why state run? The Excelsior Vittoria is probably the
classiest. It's 250 euros for a room in the off-season. There's another
one just along the clifftop which looks nicer.

There are also some really expensive hotels in Amalfi.

This one has great views and beautiful gardens. We plan to stay there again.

Another one with good views, but not on the cliff. Also cheaper

Sorrento's on the "Costiera Sorrentina"...

Anyway, the best is the "Albergo dei Cappuccini" in Amalfi (at the
southernmost end of the Costiera Amalfitana), an ancient monastery...

Once was inexpensive - not anymore :-(

best,

Once was very expensive for the rich and not much for the poor since a vow
of poverty was required to enter!

I seem to remember *the* one is called Vesuvio or similar? Caruso stayed
there, even! One entrance was down the road between the main square and the
beach village. Very good gardens, palatial 1890s, etc. We couldn't afford
it!

...actually Caruso stayed at the Hotel Vesuvio in Naples (there's a
room named after him)...

I don't remember the name of the hotel in Sorrento (where the living
italian artist Lucio Dalla composed the successful song "Caruso"

today everything's so expensive here... perhaps compared to the rest
it's not much pricey...
