it is a short step but a long fall to most of the water from sorrento
hotels although they do have water access, it is not a beachy area.
Positano has nice beach but the hotels are again largely along the hillside

Take the bus or train north about 3 stops from Sorrento. Nice beaches. Can
not remember the name of the town. And wifes travel diary was stolen
earlier this year.

Think you must mean east don't ya? The coast line runs roughly
east and west along there, and the train line stops at Sorrento.
Okay, maybe it's more like northeast or something. Basically
back towards Pompeii. But like you, I seem to remember a small
town east of Sorrento with better beachs. Piano di Sorrento maybe?
(which shouldn't be hard considering that Sorrento doesn't really
have any sand beaches).
