Default N.German coast - guesthouses, B+B?

My wife and I are planning a not-too-strenuous cycle trip from
Cuxhaven, along the German coast towards Holland (but not minding too
much if we don't get that far). We have a good selection of
maps plus some advice leaflets on this area from the UK Cyclists Touring
Club. They suggest using youth hostels, but we'd rather go slightly
more upmarket than that, to something like "Bed and Breakfast"
or small hotel/guesthouse accomodation.

Any suggestions/pointers to finding this sort of accommodation in
that area? Is it likely that we can take a chance on finding
such accommodation as we arrive at each planned stop? This will
be in mid-May. We'd probably want to have at least the
first and last night's booked, with flexibility in between.

(I get the feeling that German tourism doesn't quite have the same
idea of B&B as say, the UK and Ireland. I've heard the expression:
"Zimmer mit Frühstuck", but have the feeling that's more a long-term
thing?).

Yes, you will find that B&B. Its called " Zimmer mit Frühstück ", or you
will find a
"Gasthof mit Zimmervermietung". In may it wouldn't be a problem.

No - that's really about the same thing. There are some B&Bs in Germany
which make most of their money with e.g. craftsmen who work in an area
for a longer time but I've encountered the same thing in Britain, too. So in
general "Zimmer mit Frühstück" is the same as B&B. The only problem
is to find them... I'd recommend that you ask at the tourist informations
for them, they might check which one's free and explain how to find them.

'Zimmer frei' ('Room[s] available' - 'Zimmer belegt' means 'occupied') is a
sign to look out for as you cycle along. Usually there's no problem finding
one in villages and smaller places, esp in areas popular with tourists.
However, May isn't quite high season and you'll find that while rooms aren't
occupied, many owners haven't yet got round to receiving guests and signs
have been taken down. Tourist offices usually are quite helpful in
suggesting ones that are open, and even phone to confirm availability. Some
owners prefer to rent a minimum of three days. You'll also find that English
isn't universally spoken, and a basic knowledge of German will come in
handy, esp when communicating with the mainly retired people who run b&b's.
One thing is almost certain: you'll receive warm welcome everywhere.

I did that trip last year and stayed in a Gasthaus in Wremen, half way
between Cuxhaven and Bremerhaven along the coast. This place was in walking
distance to the harbor, which is a site to see at low tide.
During my 14 day by car trip, my wife, grand daughter and I only stayed in a
motel/hotel twice. Mostly due to lack of time or darkness. In these B&B we
always got breakfast and believe me, they where not "doughnuts and coffee".
Time permitting, would do it again in a heartbeat again.
Hope it helps
