Default munich to northern italy

hi. we are a group of three expatriate couples who live in munich. we
want to take a four or five day drive into northern italy - perhaps
piedmont - to buy some wine, eat some yummy food and relax. any
suggestions for itinerary, hotels, wineries? thanks. all suggestions
appreciated and considered.

Take the train down to Bozen (runs about hourly) and check out the
museum of the 'Iceman'. The Regina Hotel is a half block from the train
station (3* I think) and is not too expensive and has a decent buffet
for breakfast. There are several places in town for good Schnitzel -
check any of the guide books such as Steve's or Frommer's Northern Italy
guide. Take the train from Bozen up to Meran and you can also have good
Schnitzel and ride a chair lift into the Dolomites for some hiking or
skiing (depending on the season). AFAIR, Meran was more expensive than
Bozen. Neither is a particularly large town and it is fairly easy to
find your way around. Brixen also has some good restaurants, but it
didn't strike me as a particularly interesting town from the tourist
standpoint. If you want northern Italian, then head another couple
hours south to Verona on that same Munich/Roma train line (it's about 5
hours from Munich to Verona). Much to see and do in Verona. If you
interested in Verona I can supply a few thoughts, let me know.

I can recommend the River Hotel in Giovena - it's near the monastery
where The Name of the Rose was made.
