Default Munich Airport Question

I'm trying to find either the 1) fastest or 2) the most economical way
to get an elderly parent to Garmisch (near Oberammagau). I detest
overseas travel and would prefer not to accompany the parent but will
if I have to.

I have never driven in Germany and would like *explicit* directions on
how to get from the Franz Joseph-Something (?) airport to a train
station that would take us into the Alps. Posts, email, commentary
about elderly-people-who-have-never-travelled-to-high-altitudes-but-are-being-not-so-subtly-coerced-to-do-so--all
greatly appreciated.

There is a train station at the Munich terminal. The train ride into
Munich's central station takes about 25 minutes and from there you can of
course connect to anywhere. Good luck.

You'll find a train, S-bahn, from the airport itself
The trip to Garmisch-Partenkirchen is little more than an hour and involves
at least one change of train, usually att München Ostbahnhof.
At München O there's elevator for the S-bahn only so the parent have to
climb some steps to find the other platform.
München O:
http://www.bahn.de/extrahtml/pdf/bah...chen_ostbf.pdf
You'll find the timetable on
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
You can type in Munich airport or München flughafen as departure station and
Garmisch-Partenkirchen as destination

There's an S-Bahn (suburban rail) station inside the airport. It's a
terminus, all S-Bahns starting there take you to the Munich city centre.
Get out at the central station ("Hauptbahnhof"). From there, you'll have
plenty of options to get to Garmisch. RegionalExpress (RE) trains leave
every hour.

It's possible to book a through ticket airport - Garmisch at the airport.
If you don't find an open teller, you can also buy an S-Bahn ticket on one
of the vending machines in the airport to the central station, and get a
separate ticket to Garmisch from there.

I don't understand why you think it's necessary to drive any part of the
journey or how you expect to get a car when you've just arrived, but you
don't have to anyway.

At the Airport, there is the Malteser Hilfsdienst, who takes care of
disabled people (and IIRC anybody else who is willing to pay for the
service). The link is on the Website on Munich's airport:
http://www.munich-airport.de/EN/Area...ung/index.html
This service has to be booked in advance and I do not know about billing
and payment. The Contact says
Malteser Service Organisation (special services subject to fees)
Tel.: +49 (0)89 975-6 33 33
Fax: +49 (0)89 975-9 01 75
These people should be able to bring your parent to the train-station in
the airport and to the local train to the main-station.
At the train-station, there is the Bahnhofsmission Muenchen, who help
people at changing trains etc. (http://www.bahnhofsmission-muenchen....t=wir%FCberuns).
At the main-station trains to Garmisch leave at least once per hour (IIRC).

Alternatively you can contact the Tranfer-Service mentioned at
http://www.munich-airport.de/EN/Area...hen/index.html and ask how much
they would charge.

And as you can see München O isn't the only alternative for a change of
trains, perhaps the main station Hauptbahnhof is more convenient , elevator
from S-bahn ,no steps but a rather long walk.

Take a train to your train 8-) Or there will be a bus to a train
station. Public transportation in Germany is terrific!

I'm a fairly elderly person who jaunts all over Germany via public
transportation every two or three years. It's a cinch.

Garmisch is not a high altitude destination. There should be no
detrimental effects to your parental unit. It is situated in a pretty
valley with the alps visible around it.

You may be happy you did this someday. It is a nice thing to do. I am
sorry you do not want to visit such a lovely part of the world.

Good Luck

I thought that the train to Garmisch was not routed through Ostbanhof..

You aren't except for the intercity train.

My fault. As I said later there are many possible connections, not at least
because there are two S-bahn routes from airport to central Munich. But
there's at least one connection with a change of train at Ostbahnhof

It's a pity that you are setting off on this trip with such a bad attitude. Germany is a great place to visit. I
have been there several times and thoroughly enjoyed it. Of all the places I have been, Garmische-Patrenkirchen was
one of my favourite spots. It is very tourist friendly. We had a great time there and the people were wonderful.

You should have no problem getting there by train. As others have mentioned, public transportation in Germany is a
nice way to travel. It is easy to make connections, and I always found the people at the ticket windows extremely
helpful.

The altitude will not be a problem. G-P is in a valley and surrounded by beautiful mountains. I hope for your sake
that the train ride down from Munich is as scenic as the drive that I took down from Landsburg.

We stayed at the Gassthaus Fraudorfer and the people who run it are incredibly friendly. The food was terrific. In
the evening they have slap dancing, which is quite entertaining. As much as we enjoyed the Fraudorfer, we moved one
block down the street to the Poste Hotel, which was much nicer and only a little more expensive. Their dining room
is more sedate, and the breakfast buffet was one of the best I ever had. If you can manage to get a corner room you
will have an incredible vista.

Much thanks to *all* who responded with incredibly helpful--and
KIND--information. The parental unit heard the responses with a smile
and agreed with nhampton that I'm something of a misanthrope for not
wanting to visit Garmisch.

Again, thanks very much to everyone for great information.
