Don't know Mulhouse itself, but have been to the surrounding area many
times.

Mulhouse used to be known as "The Manchester of France" - textile
manufacturing area - big car factory near it today. Home of French
railway museum and there's an "Eco-Museum" of old houses nearby.

Not far away (less than an hour by train) is beautiful Colmar - and a
little further Strasbourg - "Petite France" is the old town area
there.

The nearby Vosges mountains are very close and are similar to the
Black Forest - but with a tenth the number of visitors.

The area was German until 1648, German again 1870-1918, yet again in
WWII - so a blend of French and German culture and some people
(particularly older people) still speak a German dialect.

You're also only an hour away from Basel in Switzerland, and the Black
Forest in Germany is very close.

So, even if Mulhouse maybe isn't a beautiful place in itself, you're
in a fascinating area with lots to see. Alsace produces some of the
best white wines in France, the beer's good, and I have a bus map
which indicates an extensive urban bus network. It's on the main
Strasbourg-Basel railway line with frequent services.

So - get Googling!!!

You're welcome - the Isenheimer Triptych is housed in the Musée
Unterlinden in Colmar:

If you're in Colmar, there's a little branch-line railway which goes
up to Metzeral in the Vosges - it's a pleasant journey.

( - wish I was going to Alsace in a week's time!!)

Spent 3 days there and its a nice town. A must see is the French Nat'l Auto
Museum (Musee National de L'Automobile). Decent tram bus service goes to all
four corners and there is a pedestrian only zone, also international rail
access. Airport is near Basel about 35 km away. The college community
demographics can make for affordable living. You're prety much in the middle
of Europe so choices for weekend trips will be extensive.
